Ex-FBI agent gets prison time for hammer attack

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A former FBI agent and Vietnam War veteran who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for slaying his son's girlfriend in November 2008 was sentenced Wednesday to eight to 20 years in prison .
Edward Preciado-Nuno, 63, beat Kimberly Long to death with a hammer, striking her more than a dozen times in the head. She also had numerous defense wounds, prosecutors said.
Preciado-Nuno, who testified at the trial, said Long had attacked him with a hammer first and he was defending himself when he killed her.
At the sentencing hearing before Judge Donald Mosley, Preciado-Nuno apologized to the victim's family and to his own family for what had happened.
Defense attorney Tom Pitaro asked the court to take into consideration his client's work with the FBI and service his nation and sentence Preciado-Nuno to probation.
Prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci said Preciado-Nuno already was given that consideration by the jury, which convicted him of voluntary manslaughter.
Prosecutors were seeking a murder conviction in the case.
Long's adoptive father and mother, as well as her biological mother, all testified at the sentencing hearing and asked Mosley to sentence Preciado-Nuno to the maximum allowed under the law.
Mosley obliged them, saying that it was difficult to believe that striking someone in the head 13 times, including the back of the head, was done in self-defense.
Carol Heckeler, Long's adoptive mother, said on Friday that justice had been served by the verdict. "Kimmy can rest in peace now," she said.
Preciado-Nuno, a 25-year veteran FBI agent and former Marine, came to Las Vegas in 2008 to try to settle problems between Long and his son, Jeffery Preciado.
In the weeks leading up to Long's death, her five-year relationship with Preciado had crumbled.
Authorities contend Preciado and his father wanted to evict Long from the couple's home and gain custody of their son in the wake of a fight several days before the slaying. Police were called to the house during that incident but made no arrests. Several days after the fight, Preciado went to a police station to make a report against Long.
On the morning of the incident, while Preciado was staying at a hotel, a confrontation occurred between Preciado-Nuno and Long, sparking the fatal fight.

I agree, that is a terrible to leave this world. In relationships parents really need to stay out of their children business, I'm pretty sure his son and his girlfriend would have came to an conclusion and she would still have her precious life.
To EZ & Rebels 34
Laugh out Loud - Really!! How can anything so terrible as a young mother killed in such a brutal way be something to joke or make light about?!!!? How would you feel if it were your mother, wife, or daughter whose head was bashed in over 12 times with the claw part of a claw hammer? She tried to protect herself but he broke her arm and keep beating her. I do not think it would be something to "laugh out loud" about. Shame on anybody who makes light of a senseless and horrible end to a young woman's life.
That's just wrong Rebels34... but lol.
Stop............hammer time.............
The defense attorney wanted "probation" for a murder charge? What kind of rope was he smoking, (yeah I said rope) ! Thirteen shots to the head with a hammer ....ouch! No way one can argue "self defense"-----this was overkill ! For "gary", unless you know something else that was testified to in court, the above story has nothing in it that points to "premeditated murder", (to charge and convict for that offense, there has to be "prior planning"....., the story doesn't contain those facts).
It's proabably a life sentence any way.
She must have been one seriously tough woman that he couldn't have wrestled her to the ground. 8 to 20? He lucked out.
Preciado's son was staying at a hotel while the father murdered his girlfriend/child's mother. Does this seem like it was premeditated to anyone else besides me? And he only gets 8 years (forget about the 20 year possibility!), for cold blooded murder because he worked for the FBI? Why does this dual standard continue unabated? Has society been so indoctrinated by TV, and movies to not see this for what it is? I've lost all respect for the "system" long ago. This solidifies my reasoning.
Its time..to feed him to sharks. (Human sharks) within the Nevada department of prisons. I am sure he has savored the pleasure of doing this to many who have come across his path as a FBI agent. Claiming self defense against a defenseless woman whom he beat to death with a hammer is in my view, and under the law 1st degree murder. He should have got life. Crooked and corrupted Nevada courts at work.
He should have been a Metro cop. He would have got 8 months paid leave out of it.
