A former Las Vegas man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to entice a minor to have sex with him.

Johnson Sheffield, 28, of Austin, Texas, pleaded guilty in November to two counts of coercion and enticement of a minor. He was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro in Las Vegas.

Authorities said Sheffield posted an advertisement on craigslist.com that stated he was seeking a girl for sex. It included two photographs -- one of his face and another of a penis.

An undercover detective from the Henderson Police Department told Sheffield that he was a 14-year-old girl, and Sheffield asked whether they could meet. He then arranged to meet the next day at a grocery store in Henderson.

When Sheffield arrived at the grocery store, he was arrested. Detectives later executed search warrants on Sheffield's cell phone and found evidence that he had solicited several other minor girls for sex, authorities said.

It's difficult to defend a man who lusts after young girls. Nobody likes a pedophile. But, where is the victim here? Ten years is a little excessive.

This guy deserves more than 10 years. Sure, he was caught this time, but how many times has he gotten away with it before now??

These kinds of stories never get old. The Henderson cop performed his own solo version of "To Catch A Predator". Easiest arrest ever; like shooting fish in a barrel. Perps like this can't help themselves.

Murder and get a medal...commit no crime and get ten years. I guess Henderson detectives have nothing else better to do. You do realize that fifth-teen years ago henderson was the armpit of Nevada, now it big ol city....go figure!

I am sure that I am not going to be popular by my opinion on this issue but ...
Don't get me wrong. If a man engages in a sexual conduct with a minor, there is a price to pay. But let's evaluate what happened here. Sure, this guy had a plan and if not (thankfully) interrupted it would probably happen. However, I think 10-year sentence is just out of line.
I am not saying there should be no punishment. It needs to be because the intent was there but 10 years? Really?
I myself have to girls; if someone hurts them the only person going to a prison would be me for chopping that guy on pieces. But this? I think the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
I found this ridiculous and I would even go as far as saying this fits to an "unusual" punishment.
