Funeral for a Fallen Officer

  • Photos by K.M. Cannon

The funeral procession for Las Vegas police corrections officer Daniel Leach, a 25-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, arrives on Saturday at Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer at 55 E. Reno Ave. "He will be missed but he will never be forgotten," Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie said at the service, the second in a week for the department. On Wednesday, officer Trevor Nettleton, who was fatally shot in his garage on Nov. 19, was buried.

  • Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie presents a flag to Laura Leach during the burial service Saturday for her husband, Daniel Leach, at Boulder City Cemetery. Leach was on his way to the Tucker Holding Facility in Laughlin on Nov. 21 when the van he was driving collided with a dump truck on U.S. Highway 95 near Searchlight.

From reading the blogs and discounting the usual Cop Haters, it appears that the uninformed taxpaying citizen has pretty much lost patience with their local government and particularly your Police Force.

Sadly, all this new-age thinking, rehabilitation, early release from prison and tax based educational programs for criminals is not living up to the expectations that were presented and promised by its inventers.

Let's start with the simple plan. The goal is to make Las Vegas, Nevada the safest city in the world for tourists and locals alike. Sooooo.....how do we accomplish this. Zero tolerance for crimes committed in Las Vegas. Commit a crime in Las Vegas, you go to jail. The bad guys would take notice very quickly and have a clean pair of underwear to take to jail or leave and go somewhere else. That is really the easy part, the hard part is cooperation from the court system.

Can you imagine the impact this would have on our economy. More tourists, more jobs, more money flowing into our community. The Media for once could tout "Las Vegas the Safest City in the World". What tourist wouldn't want to visit our city on a vacation?

Believe it or not this is possible with leadership that doesn't rub shoulders with the "Good Old Boys", or "who is not bought and paid for", or "Who is sleeping with the enemy".

Honor is a gift you give to yourself.

    Just an old cop reflecting,

    Native:

It doesn't matter if Officer Nettleton was in North Las Vegas, Boulder City or Henderson! He was in his home when he was attacked and the minute he pulled his gun probably Department issued gun he was back on duty! Regardless, he didn't deserve for this to happen to him. I would be disappointed if LVMPD did not honor him.

Native this was a young man with 2 small kids that will never grow up with their father around. And how devasting to his mother to be here for the holidays probably upstairs sleeping and have to be woken up with gun fire and to see her child lying dead on the floor. I hope carma doesn't come and bite you for your vindictive comments.

No doubt I will do everything in my power to make sure Dougie Boys get elected again! Native & Jennifer if you don't like LVMPD then go back to LAPD and don't forget to check in with your probation officers when you get there!

I think Native meant to write "Naive"

    Jennifer:

For your information I took Thank You as a compliment! Grow up! You sound ridiculous.

J2026G: Your certainly welcome! Sorry you have to deal with Stupid!

Native: Let me put it real simple for you! If an officer is off duty and is a witness to a crime they become back on duty at that point! Remember not to long ago when a off duty police officer was at a bar when several punks came in and created an armed robbery??? Guess what soundly he was back on duty and stepped up to the plate to protect the citizens that were out for nice evening. He also has paid the price for being shot! So unless you are big enough to step up to the plate and lay your life down for another human being shut up!

    NATIVE:

"He was also in NORTH LAS VEGAS; therefore, out of his jurisdiction"

Native must not be much of one...

The Las Vegas Police Department and the Clark County Sheriff's Office merged into one entity in 1973. Every LVMPD officer has jursidiction throught ALL of Clark County.

"For your information officers are on duty 24/7."

That is so ridiculous. So cops should NEVER:
    sleep
    have sex
    drink.

...Since they are always on duty and all.

He was also in NORTH LAS VEGAS; therefore, out of his jurisdiction.

Metro is just a big bunch of crooks.

    JENNIFER:

    I have a Bachelor's degree thank you.

And I am not a member of the PPA (the police officer union).

I am not professing to have all the answers. However, you are speaking from a position of ignorance as you do not know what the profession of policing entails.

What do you do for a living?...IF you have the temerity to answer, chances are I can slam your profession and you can (rightfully) tell me where I am wrong (unless I have done your job before).

    Moron?......OH...my feelings are hurt!
