CLARK COUNTY CASES: H1N1 flu possibly killed boy

Infection rate highest in youngsters

A 6-year-old North Las Vegas boy died Thursday from H1N1-related causes, the Clark County coroner's office said.

The death, which has yet to be confirmed by the Southern Nevada Health District, would be the first local death of a child from causes related to H1N1.

  • The boy, Daejon Meadows, died Thursday afternoon at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center from respiratory failure, H1N1 and sickle cell anemia.

The health district on Monday would not confirm whether it was investigating the case.

Efforts to contact the boy's family were unsuccessful.

Of the 20 local swine flu deaths confirmed by the health district, all have been adults.

But the highest rates of flu involve those ages 10 to 14, with 400 cases per 100,000 Clark County residents, Brian Labus, a senior epidemiologist with the health district, told the Review-Journal late last month.

That is about eight times as many as those in the 40- to 44-year-old age group.

"The highest rate by far is people under 20," he said.

Children are among the priority groups that the health district is encouraging to get immunized for the swine flu because they are in close contact with each other in school and child care settings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 26 percent of the recorded hospitalizations for swine flu nationally have been people ages 5 to 18, and 24 percent have been ages 25 to 49.

Nine percent have been 19 to 24.

Those 65 and older account for 7 percent of H1N1 hospitalizations.

The health district continues immunizing certain high-risk groups for the swine flu this week at its main office at 625 Shadow Lane, near Valley Hospital.

The office will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday. The office will be closed Wednesday for Veterans Day.

Those in the priority groups include pregnant women, caregivers of children younger than 6 months, medical personnel who deal directly with patients, and children and young adults between the ages of 6 months and 24 years, but excluding those with medical conditions between the ages of 19 and 24.

Two types of vaccine are available, one injectable and one inhalable. Individuals who are eligible to receive the inhalable FluMist will not be given the injectable vaccine.

Although considered at risk for contracting the flu, those between the ages of 18 and 64 with medical conditions are not being given the vaccine at this time.

Next time you see how the chest X-ray evolves within 72 hours of the person hitting the emergency room as compared to your "regular" flu patient, let me know how your "stats" do for you.

Thumbs Down For CDC wrote on November 10, 2009 10:13 AM: You want to see stupidity? Hey! Lets create flu strains that dont exist to see if we can make a horribly deadly one (see quote from WSJ at bottom)!!! WOO HOO!

In 1977 when a H1N1 virus hit the world starting in Russia, it was determined its structure was so like the 1957 one that the only place it could have come from was an accidental lab release.

Everyone recall killer bees? Another man made accidental release from a lab.

What stupid human award should go to scientists trying to create something that could wipe everyone out??? Well, the award goes to the CDC...see below

    -----------------------

"Scientists at the CDC recently launched experiments in the agency’s labs in which they infected ferrets with both the new H1N1 virus and the highly lethal H5N1 avian flu virus to see if they might “reassort” to create a new hybrid."

    -------------------------
WRONG! If is not 10x worse.

It is because those with underlying medical conditions have no natural immunity or vaccine created immunity to H1N1.

While a healthy person can fight off a novel virus, it is harder for someone with medical problems. Period.

If the actual virus were 10x on the lungs, healthy people would also be dying at a larger rate and they are not.

no more no less. IT IS NOT MORE DEADLY IN ITS STRUCTURE!

It is more deadly because more people have no immunity so more people get it and more people then die from it.

    Mathematics.....

One this one rips through the population, etc. we will not have a problem until a generation or two down the road when it comes around again and no one has contacted it in their lifetime

Not Rocket Science wrote on November 10, 2009 10:02 AM: People, this is not brain surgery.

The reason more people are getting it or dying from it is because except for some persons in the population (over 65 and those that got a H1N1 variant in the 1957 and 1977 pandemics), there is no natural immunity. That's it.

This does not mean it is a deadly virus in its structure.

It is more deadly due to a lack of immunity.

Thus it hits pregnant women more because 1) they like almost everyone else has no immunity AND 2)pregnancy causes a variety of changes in the body, most notably decreased lung capacity, along with increased cardiac output and oxygen consumption, it puts pregnant women at high risk for complications. In addition, parts of the mother's immune system are selectively suppressed, a process that offers essential protection to the fetus, but decreases the mother's ability to fight off infection.

Again, this is not a more deadly flu virus, just one that more people will get.

Mike - The reason Obamas kid have not been vaccinated is because they are outside the groups who are suppose to receive the shot.

As far as an unborn child dying from the vaccine, did you just pick it up on flu paranoia websites because it did not happen.

That's why people with underlying medical conditions are so much more at risk. Children/Adults with asthma, anyone with anything that compromises the heart/lungs need to be immunized. I was in line just like everyone else getting my children immunized.

The worst cases I have seen and cared for have been pregnant women. And NO you don't see what happens to them from the common flu!! Please stop treating everything as a conspiracy - this IS a pandemic that can easily be stifled IF people take the time to protect themselves, their children (and unborn children).
