WASHINGTON -- Rep. Joe Heck on Thursday was named chairman of a House subcommittee that monitors the government's technical intelligence gathering.
The Technical and Tactical Intelligence Subcommittee oversees the workings of CIA and military spy satellites, and programs that intercept and decipher electronic signals.
Heck, R-Nev., is a freshman member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said he asked Heck to lead the subcommittee because of his background as an Army colonel and as a private consultant on homeland security.
The subcommittee has five Republicans and three Democrats. Little, if any, of its work is conducted in public.
"I intend to work closely with other members to provide thorough oversight and meaningful reforms to keep our families and communities safe," Heck said in a statement.
A separate subcommittee deals with terrorism, counterintelligence and information gathering by U.S. spies.

The Technical and Tactical Intelligence Subcommittee oversees the workings of CIA ..
A free-market, US Representative with a large following in this state likes to point out that the only federal agency which receives less Congressional oversight than the Federal Reserve is the CIA.
When you see guys like Heck get picked for that job you can understand why.
what a heck of a guy,a vote for more crooked govt spending
Heck voted to *extend* the PATRIOT Act. Heck is a reliable vote for BIG Government.
If you're a reform-minded Congressman, no matter how knowledgable and instrinsically capable you are or how long you have been there, you'll be banished to the back bench. Even for as long as two *decades*. Until finally, when even the Congress' own rigged rules make it impossible for the Leadership to marginalize you any longer, and when your stature and following has become so great that they can't afford to publicly humiliate you any longer, the Leadership will begrudgingly give you the bare minimum of what you're entitled to. And then try to make it seem like they've supported you all along.
Meanwhile useful idiots & team players -- even freshmen -- will get plumb committee assignments and fast-tracked to Chairmanships.
A most excellent choice to choose a freshman congressman with the knowledge, skills and abilities to make Nevada proud. I personally known Joe Heck and he is by far a man with integrity and ambition and even though he suffered taunts by the morons as well as his family he persevered and will do Nevada justice and will make Nevada a state to be a leader in technical, justice and on the cutting edges of new industries. A far cry from the Democratic idiots running the state in several positions now!
