CARSON CITY -- A 37-year-old technology architect for IGT announced Wednesday that he will be a Republican candidate for Assembly District 31, a seat now held by Assemblyman Richard "Skip" Daly, D-Sparks.
If he is elected, David Espinosa could become the only Hispanic Republican serving in the Legislature.
He said he is making his first run for public office because of his concern about the Nevada economy, especially the lack of jobs.
"Government, especially the Legislature, should mow the lawn and paint the lines and tell people to go play," said Espinosa, a pro-growth, limited government advocate. "It is imperative we fix what is broken, while preserving and reinforcing what is working. I will vote to keep taxes low so we can create an environment for success, especially for small businesses that we need to build and sustain our (economic) foundation."
A native of Barcelona, Spain, who moved to Las Vegas at age 6, Espinosa said the United States only has to look at Spain's economic problems to see what can happen with runaway government spending.
Espinosa, a graduate of Western High School, became a U.S. citizen at age 18. He moved to Northern Nevada in 1993. He has bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno.
As a technology architect, he works with a team that provides technology guidance to IGT and its customers.
A father of three, he said the cornerstone of success is education.
"Our system is broken, and I believe that a 21st century education system must include 21st century solutions." he said.
Democrats have a 26-16 membership edge in the Assembly. There are no Republicans in the Legislature who are Hispanic. Espinosa, who speaks three languages, said several Hispanic Republicans besides him will run in the November election.
Because of redistricting, Republicans have a 4 percentage point registration advantage over Democrats in District 31. When Daly won in 2010, Democrats held a wide lead in registration.

@flamer872.."I've been doing this longer than you..." Then why are you so bad at it. You horrendous grammar is overshadowed only by your complete ignorance of ideas like Marxism. I challenge to provide a single excerpt from me that addressed my theories of value, dialectical materialism, class struggle or the dictatorship of the proletariat. You really should learn the meaning of things before you start tossing big words around.
Racism has been accepted in American to mean "any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, decent, or ETHNIC origin." But if you want to re-brand your ignorant, hate-based assumptions that's fine. What moniker do you prefer; cretin, hillbilly, hispanophobe? None of them will hide how your assumptions based on the RJ calling Espinosa a Hispanic, are all that motivate you, even though most who hail from Spain prefer to be called European or even Spanish. n7v.blogspot.com wrote on January 26, 2012 04:05 PM: Hey, James! Does your brother-in-law David put his kids in private school? What specific political issues do you two "joust" about? What are David's positions? James.Alexander wrote on January 26, 2012 02:39 PM: There are some statements about David Espinosa presented in these comments that I find absolutely ridiculous. First and foremost, he is most certainly not liberal and will not suddenly vote liberal after his election. His convictions are unwavering. There should be no implication that he is trying to add a second language to our government. I'm quite literate in English and David speaks the language better than me. I know this because he is my brother-in-law and after many years of friendly verbal jousting on political topics, he doesn't back from his conservative stances. I should know since I am a democrat and have tried to sway him without success on many occasions. One thing I know is that he loves this country and loves this state deeply and has life experience which will never allow him to take our freedoms for granted. We should be so lucky to have candidates just like him running for all of our offices. kj775 wrote on January 26, 2012 01:58 PM: Or maybe the author of the article incorrectly assumed that someone from Spain is "Hispanic" and injected that into the article without Mr. Espinosa's consent? And maybe some of the other's who have commented do not know his political positions and are jumping to conclusions on his stand on many of the issues facing our great state! Please allow this candidate (and all of the others) to speak for themselves on their positions and stop posting nonsense that you ignorantly came up with after skimming an article and adding your obvious hatred for certain ethinic groups. Ignorance and hatred is not going to help us fix our problems. flame872 wrote on January 26, 2012 09:55 AM: bghs1986: Why don't you worship your hero Karl Marx somewhere else, and who says it's racism, Hispanics are not a race, they are an ethnicity, I'm saying that Espinosa just wants to pretend to be Republican because most Hispanics vote Democrat while some like myself vote Republican. I wouldn't be surprised if an Italian-American or a Colombian-American voted Republican. Espinosa doesn't say if he supports tough immigration laws like most Republicans are or if he is opposed to Obamacare. You just don't get it do you? You give TRUE Americans and TRUE conservatives a bad name, if you say that I disrespect this country which I don't do and I have tactics of a middle schooler, then you must have the body and mind of a pre-schooler. You don't even know who you're messing with,I have been doing this longer than you have and I am a proud Republican and a TRUE American. Wow, Marxism at it's best ReaderinNOLA wrote on January 26, 2012 05:29 AM: If he was Italian would the headline read " Italian tech worker....."? Just wondering. bghs1986 wrote on January 26, 2012 03:25 AM: I wonder what in this article leads Oscar.Jones and flame872 to conclude that Espinosa is pretending to be a conservative republican? Is it his "a pro-growth, limited government" stance? No, that can't be it. Maybe it's his promise to "vote to keep taxes low so we can create an environment for success, especially for small businesses that we need to build and sustain our (economic) foundation." No, that can't be it. I bet it has something to do with his questionable status as a resident. No, that can't be it. He has been a U.S. citizen for nearly two decades. Wait, I remember. Oscar and flamer are both ignorant, intolerant racists who can't see how much damage their infestation has been to the Republican party. Flamer's choice to continue to refer to Obama him as "Obummer," accomplishes two things. 1) He is displaying a disrespect for the office of The President and by extension our country that is inconsistent with the core patriotism of real Republicans. 2) He has abandoned all hope that anything he contributes will be viewed as anything other the rantings of a childish mind. They are so many legitimate criticisms about the Obama administration, why must he resort to the tactics of a middle schooler? flame872 wrote on January 25, 2012 10:46 PM: I also agree with Oscar.Jones and Jorge.Mansilla. I too am a HISPANIC-AMERICAN, but I am of Costa Rican descent and it looks like we have another liberal running for state assembly pretending to be a Republican. So what if he speaks 3 languages, I have family and friends that speak up to 6 languages. I also agree that English should be the official language of the United States and should always be the official language. Even if this liberal switches to Republican he will always be a King Obummer supporter, he is a phony, just like King Obummer showed his fake birth certificate saying he was born in Hawaii. Will he support tough immigration laws? I doubt it. That's why this phony should not be elected and will always be a phony no matter what. n7v.blogspot.com wrote on January 25, 2012 09:19 PM: A tech archictect for a company like IGT would be someone who designs a product/system the company is planning to rollout. For example, IGT Marketing might conceive of new Progressive jackpot one could play on a smartphone (call it "HundredMegaBucks") in legal jurisdictions. A fellow like Espinosa might be asked to write the specifications for the new mobile phone app, the online payment system, the back end servers, video links, and so forth. This should not be confused with the Orwellian job description of a DEM social engineers, who might be asked to design a system of 20 new, interconnected bureaucracies to implement the features mandated by a single ObamaCare regulation. A private sector guy is a private sector guy. We could do a LOT worse. Jorge.Mansilla wrote on January 25, 2012 06:43 PM: By the way, I agree with Oscar Jones post below, and I'm of Spaniard decent.
