Humboldt County residents seek vote on garbage plan

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL CAPITAL BUREAU
CARSON CITY -- A group of Humboldt County residents submitted a petition Wednesday that calls for a countywide vote in November to determine whether residents want a mammoth landfill for California garbage built outside of Winnemucca.
Spokeswoman Marlene Brissenden said they want a vote to guarantee that Northern California-based Recology never can deposit waste at a site 28 miles west of Winnemucca. Recology wanted to haul in by train 4,000 tons of waste five days a week for the next 95 years.
The county planning commission endorsed giving Recology a five-year extended permit to complete the environment steps needed before building the dump, but the Humboldt County Commission voted unanimously last week to deny that permit.
Brissenden said a poll she and other residents conducted found 78 percent oppose the landfill. They turned in 1,294 signatures of residents who want a public vote on the dump.
She said the county clerk will determine within a week whether enough signatures are valid and the petition question can be put before voters.
Under the petition, Brissenden said, the county could build a second landfill, but it would be no more than 50 percent larger than the current landfill, which receives 10,000 tons of trash a year, less than Recology proposes to haul in three days.
"We realized they wanted something so big that it just made us sick," Brissenden said. "

>Why Stop at $4.50 a ton?
Valid point.
But it's Recology that'd be doing the paying. Get the $ up front and if they miss a payment, set up a blockade on the road and send the trucks back with orders to return only if they're bearing a certified check!
$4,500,000 a year notes the $4.50 a ton other communities get. Why should Winnemucca stop there? Charge the kalifornicators $20 a ton. If they're that desperate to dump their trash, they'll pay it. But Winnemucca had better get the money first because the People's Republik of Kalifornia will try to pay in I.O.U.s.
No California waste dump in Northern Nevada
A site so far from Winnemucca that it can't be seen.
Imagine turning down what could be $4,500,000 A YEAR for 99 YEARS in tipping fees alone (based on $4.50 a ton in tipping fees which is what other host communites receive. Recology's offering only $1 million a year but that certainly can be negotiated upwards to more closely match what other communities receive.)
$4.5 million is roughly THREE TIMES the total property tax paid by the residents of Winnemucca in this fiscal year. $4.5 million would cover ONE HALF of ALL city expenses in this fiscal year. (It would cover expenses for General Government, Public Safety, Judicial and fund the Capital Improvement Reserve...With money left over!)
State of the art technological safety precautions will be present...Everything from dust abatement to the preservation of "night skies" addressed.
Imagine, no property taxes...Municipal services ranging from new fire engines, new schools, trash collection, paved roads, college scholarships for students. Basically whatever you might wish for PLUS a hefty check sent to EVERY household once a year...All for f-r-e-e. And the county can get a piece of the action, too. This isn't a pie-in-the-sky scenario - It's happening on the east coast in Pennsylvania. http://phillyecocity.wordpress.com/2008/08/31/living-high-on-trash-the-falls-and-tullytown-pa-landfill-expand-and-accept-radioactive-materiel-too/
Winnemucca citizens: You have the answer to your fiscal problems for the next CENTURY knocking on your door. Don't let this golden opportunity go by.
Humboldt County residents should be allowed to vote whether or not they want to become the trash dump for the kalifornicators. With 78% of the county residents opposing the landfill, it should be immediately rejected and Recology should be told to go dump their garbage in their own state. The second landfill would only accept Humboldt County waste. 10,000 tons a year is a hell of a lot LESS than 4,000 tons a day.
