LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL CAPITAL BUREAU
CARSON CITY -- Kelli Ross, the wife of Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross, said Monday that she will be a Democratic candidate for state Senate District 18 in northwest Las Vegas.
Ross, 48, said she decided to run because she is tired of the "head knocking" that went on between the two parties at the legislative session last year.
"I will listen to both sides," said Ross, who noted she is "very conservative."
"I am not partisan. I don't care if a Republican or a Democrat has a good idea. My dad said you can't complain unless you are willing to stand up at the plate and do something about it."
This will be the first bid for political office by Ross, a lifelong Southern Nevadan, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the mother of five and the grandmother of eight.
No other Democrats have announced their candidacies, but two Republican Assembly members, Scott Hammond and Richard McArthur, are running for the seat. The Senate Republican Caucus has endorsed Hammond, which has irritated McArthur, who has served longer in the Legislature.
Republicans hold a 1,300-registered voter advantage in the district, one awarded to Clark County during redistricting because of its increased population over the past decade compared with rural parts of the state. Both parties are expected to campaign keenly for the seat because Democrats now hold just an 11-10 membership advantage in the Senate.
Ross expects Democratic legislative candidates will do well during the presidential election year because they will turn out in high numbers and the Republican presidential candidates have been fighting each other.
One of her goals is to help small businesses by reducing red tape, looking at changes to the modified business tax and giving them more opportunity to grow.
Ross ran an electrical contracting business for 10 years before closing it during the recession.
"I have had to close my door and put people out of work," Ross said. "We need to do everything we can to help small business."
She said she can bring "level-headedness" to the Legislature and added that neither she nor her husband is afraid to make tough decisions, noting Steve Ross recently overcame a recall election.
"We will stand up and do what is right," Kellli Ross said. "I don't care if I am a one-termer or not."

Is this our punishment for not successfully getting rid of her smarmy joke of a husband as our city councilman?!
These two are shameless hustlers.
Mrs Corruption will make a fine senate leader just like her husband Mr Corruption in his council seat stealing and lying.
"reducing red tape" I need an explanation on that one for sure. The "red tape" I am assuming are the RULES and Laws to be followed, not BENT or BROKEN. I am also curious about her qualifications? are there any requirements?? if not I am certainly interested to get my voice in politics. I am UNEMPLOYED by choice in the MORTGAGE FIELD OF FRAUD in this town, have absolutely no ties politically or otherwise, consider myself in the LOWER MIDDLE-CLASS ( I downgraded myself due to the economy and constant increases in RATES, not income) DO NOT MINCE WORDS!! Painfully honest and outspoken and I share much too much of the same daily problems that we all do in this city. The problem to me is, the fix will be in because there are too many skeletons in our politicians ' clostes to allow a novice into the group, therefore my comnclusion will be, she'll get elected!!!!!
First you have Crook now we will have Crooks wife, Oh wait we already have that
So, let's say you want to open a business, and you need to "cut through the red tape", and you call your elected official who's only experience in business was failing and blaming it on the economy? Another loser that thinks they are qualified! This will be another Pay to Play politician that loves the color blue. At least Scott Hammond has experience and isn't married to an unethical politician...Vote for Hammond
She is saying whatever it takes, to be elected, but don't be fooled.... Her $$$$ is cooing from ALL of the Local Unions, and she WILL do their work, if people are dumb enough to vote her in.....
She is not a Democrat, be careful folks! There are not "very conservative" Democrats, they are moderate, liberal and progressive. She is not. She is a very conservative Mormon raised with their views. She is lying to you to try to get elected. Her husband Steve Ross taught her how to lie, cheat, scratch, punch, fight and steal so as to try to win this election.
Two virtually unemployed people running for ofFice for jobs - Nice!
I look forward to Kelli Ross running. I know Steve Ross as a city council leader and I know both understands the importance of home rules from community, to city and that the state legislatures don't always think that way and instead legislate from 500 miles away. I know the Republican's that are running for senate never responded to myself or others even though many of us live only about a mile from them. I look forward to working with Kelli to bring a true level head to Carson City that will not just listen to the loud minority but will bring good legislation to balance the true needs.
Let me fix this for you Mr. Vogel.
"No REAL Democrats have announced their candidacies, but two Republican Assembly members, Scott Hammond and Richard McArthur, and a carpetbagger that thinks Democrats are so stupid that they will vote for anyone with a D next to their name, Kelli Ross, are running for the seat."
Kelli Ross's entire campaign messaging is straight from the Republican Party messaging memos.
