A Las Vegas police officer fired once at a man who fled on foot after a traffic stop near Jones Boulevard and Twain Avenue Wednesday morning.

The suspect, identified by police as Nathaniel Dodd III, was not wounded in the shooting, which occurred at 10:09 a.m. on Pinewood Avenue.

Dodd was at large for about two hours before he was arrested at a relative's home on Pinewood. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of battery, one count of evading a police officer, one count of obstructing a police officer, coercion and speeding.

The police search for Dodd forced the closure of nearby streets and lockdowns at seven schools.

Dodd initially was targeted by the officer for speeding, but he refused to stop. Instead, police said, Dodd continued to drive to a home on Pinewood Avenue.

Capt. Randy Montandon said the officer confronted Dodd and the two had a brief conversation. The man fled as the officer returned to secure his patrol car, Montandon said. The officer pursued.

Montandon said the officer fired a single shot after the suspect made a threatening gesture toward him.

"The officer felt surprised by him ,and he felt endangered and fired his weapon," Montandon said.

The suspect was not struck and continued to run.

Police shut down several streets near the area of Torrey Pines Drive and Twain while officers searched for the suspect.

Montandon said Dodd had several outstanding warrants at the time of the traffic stop, including ones for domestic violence and coercion.

Police did not identify the officer involved in the shooting. He was placed on administrative leave and his name will be released in 48 hours.

I am with you Your Right. Any move can cause you your life. I am not comfortable with a cop's perception being the final word on that. There needs to be a hard and fast definition otherwise we will continue to see criticism of the men in blue, some rightful and some wrongful. It's easy to monday morning quarterback about a stranger's encounter, but what say you when it's you or your loved one that's shot or killed. I support the police but at the same time I am afraid of them.

RANGE TIME: I agree with you in some aspects, however, had the officer actually shot the low life that was running in the first place, we'd have nothing but cop haters and people saying the officer murdered the fleeing suspect! Metro can't win!!

What is the definition of a threatening gesture by Montandon, or, better yet, Nevada Revised Statutes?

    Perception is not probable cause.
