JANE ANN MORRISON: Opponents of 'Rent' production shouldn't restrict all students

Armando Ronconi has been cast in Green Valley High School's production of "Rent: School Edition," and his mom is thrilled, even though her 16-year-old will be playing a drag queen who dies of AIDS.

"As far as I know, my son is not gay," Alice Ronconi said. "But from what he has shared with me, there are kids dealing in their personal lives with these issues."

  • For Alice Ronconi, the musical gives her an opportunity to talk with Armando about homosexuality, promiscuity, drug use and AIDS. "I come from the camp that these are topics that our kids are dealing with every single day, and this is a platform to open up discussion, an opportunity to reinforce your values."

But there are parents who refused to give their children permission to try out for the show, believing this musical is inappropriate for a high school. The award-winning show, which ran on Broadway for 12 years, features three couples, one gay, one lesbian and one straight, and there is drug use, sex and homosexuality.

It's understandable that some parents want to protect their children from the ugly side of life. But they should not be trying to stop Armando Ronconi or any other student from performing.

Principal Jeff Horn has heard from six or seven parents who object to the choice of "Rent," even though the school production eliminates vulgar language and a sexual number called "Contact." Horn refuses to stop the show, so parents are going over his head to see if he can be forced to stop it. The parents' objections, primarily to the homosexuality, hasn't reached the level of the School Board yet, according to board President Terri Janison.

Jennifer Hemme, head of the school's theater department, held a casting call last week for the show, to be performed over two weekends in January and February.

Hemme said about 10 or 15 students who had said they wanted to try out didn't show up. She had no way of knowing how many didn't show up because their parents declined to give permission.

"I get the feeling there are a couple of parents organizing this and all the people angry about it are mostly parents of choir students, not theater students," Hemme said.

There are 20 principal roles, and they double-cast the show so more can participate. Hemme had no trouble casting the musical. Not one student has objected.

The reason parents should stop objecting: No student is required to participate. This is entirely voluntary. No student participates without parental permission.

Parents raising a ruckus here might want to consider what happened in Corona del Mar High School in Newport, Calif., when the musical became an issue earlier this year. The principal yanked it but later it was produced.

The Los Angeles Times reported the ugly aftermath. Three high school varsity football players posted a video on Facebook threatening to rape and kill the 17-year-old lead actress in the musical and used slurs against another student they believed was gay.

In March, the ACLU sued the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, alleging there was an official tolerance of misogyny and homophobia at the high school. The lawsuit was settled in September without any admission of guilt by the school district; but this year, the students and administrators will undergo training in harassment and discrimination.

I received no answers from e-mails asking for interviews with parents who objected to "Rent: School Edition."

But I suggest they need to be careful what they wish for.

Especially when the answer is so simple.

    Don't like it, don't go.

If they think that high school students studying theater can exist entirely in a world of Disney musicals, they're not being realistic.

Sometimes the sayings on T-shirts are concise and on point: The First Amendment Is Not For Sale It's For Rent.

Wanting to protect your children from the seamy side of life is admirable, even sweet.

But other parents shouldn't be able to stop Alice Ronconi's son from performing with his mom's permission.

Maybe school administrators need to hear from more parents who support the First Amendment. Perhaps that would counterbalance what seems like a vocal minority objecting to a musical modernizing Puccini's "La Bohème," the classic opera about poverty, loyalty, love and death.

Did you support Wallace when he stood in the doorway too? Or the burning of Huck Finn. If you as a parent do not want your children to see Immorality, bigamy, rape, murder, worship of false gods or anything else you see as filth, then you better take away their bible too. My morality is one that I know God's top ten greatest hits, and the golden rule and I will not listen to hate. It is the same rhetoric that hatemongers have used forever to fight change and progress. And for the record, it was once illegal for people of different races to marry or for women or African Americans to vote. But now we have a president of mixed race and people are still hiding their hate behind their religion. The KKK considers themselves Christian though I think most normal people would disagree. Point is trying to stop the play is censorship and that is the way of the Nazis, not of a parent of a GVHS student. One would hope. If you want to continue to teach your child hate and intolerance, just know that they are the ones who are suffering. I will pray for you honey. That God opens up your heart and mind. Hope you change your mind and really think about what it means to be a child of god. PEACE

Thankfuly the judge saw that the lawsuit had no merit and the very talented cast and crew performed to standing ovations.MG, you asked "how does portraying a Baptist Minister, a Catholic Priest, and an LDS Stake President as closed minded bigots promote peace?" To show that if they would maybe stop preaching hate in their churches then maybe their flock will stop believing that gays should be killed or hurt or discriminated against. It shows the hypocrisy of religions. Hate in the name of God? Makes you no better than Fred Phelps honey. And as far as another name I think the ones you have been called already, homophobe, a bigot, a anti-Semite, a head in the sand parent work just fine and are correct. I may just add this. Sad, unfortunate, and naive. Is that original enough? If you actually saw the play and did not cry then you are part of the reason it is so needed and powerful. The play was portrayed correct. But you have to see the play to get that too.

Since District Policy 6150 (13) is applicable only to electronic media, and a live play falls outside electronic media, could you indicate which applicable policy you base your objection to the plays on?

    Perhaps then we will understand.

6150(12) refers to instructional materials that must be approved by the principal.

The news stories I have seen indicate that the plays were approved.

NAC 390.120 and 390.140(1)(a-c) allow parents to request reconsideration, but in no way indicate that the school is required to acquiesce to the parents underlying demand.

Again, to which policies do you refer?

Chrissy wrote on November 05, 2009 06:44 PM: It has nothing to do with the policies. I quote from Hilton's Motion for Preliminary Injunction to be heard on November 10,2009 (a couple days before the premiere):

"Any portion of electronic media in any format that is rated "R" or "PG-13" shall not be shown to students any any grade level within the school district under any circumstances."

The policy refers to ELECTRONIC MEDIA!!!!!! Last time I checked a play was not a dvd, video tape, internet video, etc... Live plays can NEVER be electronic media. This is ridiculous. Cory Hilton should be sanctioned under Nevada's Rule 11 equivalent for bringing a frivolous lawsuit.

Selectively highlighting "in any form" does not transmute a live play into electronic media.

Morever, the plaintiff's are in no danger of "irreparable injury" that outweigh free speech rights.

I hope they're enjoying their 15 minutes of fame as they try to set civil rights a few decades back, and I hope the judge sees through this ridiculous charade.

I pity you if you truly believe all you said.

I do not need to come up with any better names to call you... It sounds like others have pretty well covered it.

I have no problem with you having a different opinion from me about the play. What I DO have a problem with is that you ARE TRYING TO DECIDE FOR OTHERS what is appropriate for THEIR children.

It is as simple as that.

M.G. wrote on October 29, 2009 04:37 PM: There we go again... more defense of the love and tolerance of the plays through name calling and intolerance of others opinions. JDM, what you and the others that keep attacking us want is for your views to be tolerated and not others. You want your freedom of speech but not ours. Rules that do not meet your needs are arbitrary.

This issue got my attention because of the content. I complained to Mr. Horn - ask him, it was very respectful and we agreed to disagree. When I found out these plays were new to the district and had not been put under parental scrutiny I took the opportunity to make a point. Let me translate this since close minded name callers will struggle to understand this point.... The law suit is 100% about the policies. The court could care less about the content, the only evidence will be about the policies. Then... if the district loses - they will have to make a choice.

Now, I am sure you have some more agenda driven names to call me; But, I have already been called a homophobe, a bigot, a anti-Semite, a head in the sand parent. Please refrain from those and try to be original.

One last thing...we are not that small of a group. Both plays have been pulled and teachers have been terminated over these plays. Parents do not want filth distributed to our children. Yes immorality, drug abuse, profanity are all filth.

Why are none of you concerned about the students that were prohibited from involvement with theater because of the choice of controversial material? Oh yeah...because only your morality matters

    JDM wrote on October 29, 2009 02:33 PM: M.G. et.al. --

    Who are you kidding?!

Do you really expect people to believe that this legal action is not based in a disapproval of the content of the play?

I do NOT FOR A MINUTE believe that this would have happened if someone was offended by the the Morman bigamy portrayed in the beloved American musical "Paint Your Wagon" or the radical Jewish agenda portrayed in "Fiddler on the Roof," or the inappropriate age difference of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady."

The assault on this production is clearly motivated by the subject matter and not, as some seem to claim, a selfless concern for breaking some arbitrary law.

You can try to distract from the real issue all you want, you are still a book-burning hypocrit.

Denying homosexuality and drug addiction and homelessness does not protect children from them--- it increases their risk of being negatively impacted by them because their parents chose to avoid the issue rather than discuss it in the light of day.

RENT is about LOVE, in its many forms. THAT is all that should matter here.

Jonathan Martin wrote on October 29, 2009 01:52 PM: Bottom line:
The central theme of RENT is that people should learn to MEASURE YOUR LIFE IN LOVE. That there is NO DAY BUT TODAY.

If a musical that teaches compassion is so evil, I'd hate to see the alternative.

RENT does not condone drug use. It shows the horrifying effects of addiction and homelessness. It shows that with a loving and supportive environment people can rise out of addiction.

RENT does not try to claim that homosexuality is innate or "chosen" (but seriously people, CHOSEN? REALLY?!?!). Rather, it encourages acceptance and tolerance for diversity.

I find anyone who does not believe in the values of RENT to be suspect.

    Get a grip, people!

M.G. wrote on October 28, 2009 04:57 PM: Here we go again with the finger pointing a name calling. I have no hidden agenda. I do not want plays such as this being the selections again!!! I am unsure Leana assumes there must be a hidden agenda. For the record, I am to busy working and raising my children to listen to Rush or any of the other names you listed. Leana... what is your agenda? Why is it so important to you and others that THESE plays be done by HS students? Why is it so important that my children be shown to accept lifestyles that were illegal not that long ago - and remain illegal in some states.

How does portraying a Baptist Minister, a Catholic Priest, and an LDS Stake President as closed minded bigots promote peace? How does stating that the interviewers felt unsafe and threatened because of their sexual orientation to the point the change hotels promote peace?

I keep asking and no one in favor of these plays answers... what is the agenda in having these plays?

Leana wrote on October 26, 2009 01:36 PM: M.G. by filing a lawsuit and preventing your child from seeing or performing in the plays, what are you 'protecting"your child from? You should take a look at the comments from your fellow buds on this issue. It seems very simple. You are not worried about the policy and you cannot B.S. anyone to believe that you are. How many other issues have you filed lawsuits over? The bad lunches or overcrowding? Or how about the amount of $ the district has spent on yet another superintendent? NO ? just a play that you think promotes something you do not want your child to watch? If you love theatre then why oh why would you not embrace this opportunity? My comments before were not meant about only your comments. We are just lucky enough to be online at the same time. But your recent posting is interesting.Maybe you should stop listening to RUSH, Beck and Coulter please. They don't care about your children. They only care about promoting HATE and fear. If you want to protect your child, arm them with knowledge. If you go ahead with your lawsuit you only help sell more tickets. I hope you reconsider and see that a play about Matt Shepard can only help promote peace. It will not make your child gay, we promise.
Though it may make them a more well rounded person.
