Charges against a 78-year-old woman have not been filed as North Las Vegas police continue to investigate the Friday crosswalk crash that killed one girl and severely injured two others, police said.
The investigation could take weeks as officials wait to receive the driver's toxicology results and look further into details at the scene on Camino Eldorado near Tropical Parkway, Sgt. Tim Bedwell said.
Bedwell would not speculate but said the death of 6-year-old Amelia "Mia" Decker on Monday could affect the severity of potential charges the driver might face.
Alyssa Mowery, 6, remains hospitalized at University Medical Center in critical condition. Her 5-year-old sister, Rain Mowery, was treated for a fractured skull and released Sunday. The two 13-year-old girls who were walking behind the younger children were not injured.
Police would not release the driver's identity, stating it is the department's practice to withhold names unless someone is charged or arrested, Bedwell said. Although the driver in Friday's crash failed to stop at a crosswalk, a citation has not been issued.
Despite debate about the crosswalk's visibility, another vehicle stopped at the intersection should have been an indication that somebody was crossing the street, Bedwell said.
"We see this violation every day," he said.
Nevada law requires drivers to stop or slow down if another vehicle is stopped in a travel lane until they can determine whether that vehicle has halted for a pedestrian. The law also states that a crosswalk exists at any intersection, whether or not it is marked.
Five children entered a marked crosswalk near Eldorado Park about 6:45 p.m. Friday after a vehicle in the lane closest to them halted. The 78-year-old woman traveling in the outer lane did not stop and crashed into the three youngest children in the group. Preliminary investigations show the woman was probably driving no faster than 35 mph, the posted speed limit.
After impact, the woman continued driving for about 60 yards, carrying one of the girls on her hood until she stopped the car, ejecting the child, Bedwell said. Another child was either dragged or carried on the car for at least part of that distance, but police said complete details were not yet clear.

@Matt.m.."perhaps I was too harsh on the "citation" bit." That's all I am saying. Because even if I agreed that they made a bad choice here, what more punishment that the loss of their child do you think they deserve. What level of suffering would make YOU happy?
@bghs1986
BTW Your typing is not much better than mine.

But, I wont sit here and call you stupid or ignorant for your typos (or opinions).
Again, They knew the cross walk was poorly marked. They knew there were no flashing lights. They knew this has been a problem for a long time. They knew it was almost 7 PM (dark out side). They knew it was a busy street. And yet, they thought it was a good idea to have a 13 year old take care of a bunch 5 & 6 year olds at a park a half mile away from where proper adult supervision was. (and don't even get me started on all the child predators in North Las Vegas)
bghs1986 perhaps I was too harsh on the "citation" bit, how about we make them "Parents of the Year"!?!
bghs1986 you are a douchbag
beavis and butthead tonight at 10 pm
Is it true that when a Mormon dies.. they are reborn on Pluto or Mars? That's pretty far out there... Seeing how Scientiest haven't seen any life forms on those planets. Well, at least they are all high paid firefighters here on Earth.
It's not my intentsion to point fingers at anybody else, nor do I feel I'm any better than anyone else. But isn't all this back and forth stuff kinda non productive here. This is a very sad, heart breaking story here. A beautiful little girl is dead, and the other two aren't out of the woods yet.I will honor these little ones by requesting all this negitive, hateful stuff stop. What's done is done. My thoughts and prayers are with the families period. I even pray for the driver, I can't even fathom something so horrible. So everybody, please just back off here.
@bstrocks... Stop yelling! (caps) Man you're really tweeking aren't you?
@Mat.Miller.."My typo does not change the fact that these were irresponsible parents." You are entitled to believe that they are. Just as I am entitled to believe that it wasn't simply a typo, but a display of your ignorance. A display that continued into your next post when you decided to gloss over what you originally posted. You didn't merely express you opinion that parents were irresponsible for entrusting their children to a couple of 13-year-olds whose have displayed nothing more than a responsible, legal behavior. You demanded the parents be cited. That callous. judgmental superior attitude was what I called out.
bghs1986
That's great that you caught my typo.
Coming from someone who can't even quote correctly means a lot.
and........My typo does not change the fact that these were irresponsible parents.
Seriously people? I think it is very WISE of the Police Department to gather as much information as possible to be able to not only charge this woman, but to make sure it sticks when she goes to court and pleads NOT GUILTY, and then proceeds to waste taxpayers money at trial.
After all, we dont want another Casey Anthony trial, now do we. So be quiet, settle down and go twist yourself on another topic you know absolutely nothing about.
