Las Vegas CityLife Editor Steve Sebelius has been hired to write a political column for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada's largest daily newspaper, Editor Mike Hengel announced today.
The new column will run on the opinion pages of the newspaper four days a week, including Sundays.
Sebelius will begin his new duties with the Review-Journal on Jan. 30. He will cover the 2011 Legislature, as well as local politics and policy and the activities of Nevada's congressional delegation. He also will continue to write the daily blog "Slash Politics," found at www.slashpolitics.com.
"I'm very excited about returning to the pages of the Review-Journal," Sebelius said. "Nevada politics is a fertile field for a journalist, and there are some very talented writers covering it. I look forward to competing against them in the years ahead."
"I believe R-J readers will enjoy Steve's perspective on politics," Hengel said. "He brings much experience on Nevada politics at all levels and a well-respected point of view."
Sebelius came to Las Vegas in 1993, and worked at the Las Vegas Sun, covering police and Las Vegas City Hall. After spending a year at the San Bernardino Sun, he returned to Las Vegas to work for CityLife, then owned by the Wick Communications Co.
He joined the Review-Journal in 2000, and was appointed editor of CityLife in 2005 when it was purchased by the Review-Journal's parent company, Stephens Media LLC. During his tenure, CityLife was admitted to the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and in 2010 won a first-place award in that association's annual contest. He's also been recognized by the Nevada Press Association with first-place awards for best local column in 2006, 2007 and 2010, and best blog in 2010.

Welcome back Steve! Really missed you and your unbiased material. I can't help but think your comments will boost reader ship in the Review Journal, because management was sorely lacking. Notwithstanding, I think you set an excellent example for your colleagues to follow. Let's just hope that they do because the Review Journal will be far better off if they do. Incidentally, I agree with the comments rendered by CJJames.
I have enjoyed reading City Life during Steve's tenure. I have found his comments on Nevada Week in Review to be interesting, though a little more perk and passion would have improved his TV persona. So now Steve is back at the RJ, which is good news. I expect to have more insightful things to read most days. One question though. When will Thomas Mitchell crawl back under the rock from whence he came?
This guy thinks ObamaCare is 'settled law' under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution...WRONG!!
Our military, law enforcement, and ELECTED OFFICIALS need to HONOR THEIR OATH TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION!!!

So, Steve left the RJ, which was under Thomas Mitchell, to go to City Life. He then returns years later to the RJ to write for the opinion page which is under...Thomas Mitchell.
How much editing will there be of Steve's pieces? Was conservative editing one of the reasons he left in the first place? I hope the new editor in chief of the RJ pays particular attention to Mr. Mitchell's professionalism toward Steve and his column. This paper's quality has suffered for years from the damage both Mitchell and Sherman Fredericks did by selling out to the far right. Allowing Steve to be Steve would be one step in the correct direction; however as Opinion Editor Thomas Mitchell will have to back off his inclination to deny a media outlet for a voice from the political center.
Now, yet, another good reason to follow politics---Steve Sebelius, 4 days a week in the Opinion of the Las Vegas Review Journal! Sure hope Steve continues his appearances on the weekly news shows to keeps things spiced up! Best wishes and good luck on your future success!
