More than 70 warplanes from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom will fly out of Nellis Air Force Base from Feb. 27 through March 16 for a Red Flag air combat training exercise over the sprawling range north of the Las Vegas Valley, base officials said.

The exercise will be conducted by the 414th Combat Training Squadron at the 2.9-million-acre Nevada Test and Training Range with organizations assigned to the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center.

The planes will depart Nellis twice a day around noon and 6 p.m.

Aircraft from Naval Air Stations in Maryland and Washington in addition to a squadron of F-15C Eagles from Oregon's Air National Guard will participate along with F-22 Raptors from Langley Air Force Base, Va., and B-2 Spirit bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo.

The exercise also includes F-16CM Falcons from the Ohio Air National Guard and Marine F-18 Hornets from South Carolina, as well as F-18s from the Royal Australian Air Force, and GR-4 Tornados from the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom.

The Nellis base holds about four Red Flag exercises a year for U.S. and allied fighter pilots to hone their air combat skills.
