Reid, Angle even on campaign cash

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid and Sharron Angle head into the final weeks of their Senate contest essentially even when it comes to available campaign cash.

Finance reports filed Friday with the U.S. Senate showed both candidates with about $4 million cash on hand at the end of September.

So far, the candidates have raised nearly $40 million combined, making their showdown to represent Nevada in Washington potentially among the most expensive in the nation's history.

Their money, which is being supplemented by millions of dollars in spending from organizations outside the state, reflects the high stakes and national interest in the contest .

For whatever commercial airtime is left, Nevada could be carpeted by political advertisements as early voting begins today for the Nov. 2 election.

Only one congressional race has surpassed $40 million -- the 2006 New York Senate race -- according to the center for Responsive Politics. This year several including Florida, California and Nevada are likely to top that.

Reid, a Democrat seeking his fifth term, ended the third quarter with $4,007,951 in the bank. He raised $2.8 million during the three-month period and spent $7.7 million.

Angle, the Republican challenger, ended the quarter with $4,080,627 in the bank. She gained an eyebrow-raising $14.3 million from July through September and spent $12 million, her report shows.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has purchased $2.5 million in television ad time for the last two weeks of the campaign, according to reports this week.

The Center for Responsive Politics has identified more than $8.8 million that independent groups are spending to influence the outcome of the Nevada Senate race.

American Crossroads and Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies, organized by Republican strategists Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie, are spending more than $1.5 million to defeat Reid.

The Patriot Majority PAC, established by Democratic strategists Craig Varoga and George Rakis, has spent nearly $831,000 against Angle, according to the center.

Both campaigns issued statements Friday that touted their fundraising and offered pointed criticism of their opponents.

"Our campaign is confident we have the necessary resources to turn out our voters, as well as contrast Sen. Reid's record of delivering for Nevadans in tough economic times versus Sharron Angle's extreme and dangerous agenda to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, abolish the Department of Education, and dismantle the Veterans Administration by privatizing it," said Kelly Steele, a Reid spokesman.

Angle's campaign noted that it had raised an additional $3 million in October, including $1 million from Internet contributions. Angle raised more than $230,000 since Thursday, after the nationally televised Reid-Angle debate.

"We have beaten Harry Reid at his own game," said Jarrod Agen, Angle's communications director. "We vastly out-raised Reid's special-interest money with our grass-roots support and have all the momentum going into the home stretch. As the Majority Leader, Harry Reid should be absolutely embarrassed by his anemic showing this past quarter."

The campaign reports, which run in the thousands of pages, include details of expenses and contributions received from July 1 through Sept. 30.

In a breakdown provided by the campaigns, Angle received $7.8 million from individuals contributing less than $200 each. Another $6.4 million came from contributors who gave $200 or more.

Reid raised $246,934 from small individual contributors and $1.3 million from those giving $200 or more each.

So far, Reid's campaign has raised $22 million for his re-election. Angle has raised $17.9 million.

Angle and Reid also filed reports for two related committees.

Sharron Angle GOP Victory Committee reported raising $121,515 and spent $66,648 .

Reid Nevada Fund has raised $486,952 this year. It contributed $264,452 to the Nevada State Democratic Party and $67,323 to Friends of Harry Reid, his Senate campaign committee.

Both committees relied heavily on big money contributors.

Angle's GOP Victory Committee received eight contributions of $10,000 or more. Those contributions included $12,400 from Reno rancher James Buell and $10,000 each from Las Vegas Sands executives Patrick Dumont and Sivan Ochshorn .

Reid's Nevada Fund received 38 contributions of $10,000 or more. Those contributions included $12,400 from Las Vegas retiree Guy Gundlach, and $10,000 each from William Hornbuckle and Felix Rappaport, top executives of MGM Resorts International.

Oh, yes, the "real American" logical fallacy: sorry, 702marine, anyone born here or naturalized as just as real an American as you, regardless of who they support in elections. Just because you don't like the different stances some folks take on issues doesn't give you the right to elevate yourself above those people.

Actually, it could be observed that such intolerance is quite unAmerican. After all, we've been "the melting pot" society for a couple centuries now, welcoming people of diverse origins and views, and we've claimed our unity in diversity as our nation's exceptional strength. Our military personnel, like you, perhaps, have dedicated their lives to protect the liberty of folks at home, and personal liberty includes the freedom to hold a divergent opinion from others.

Sadly, I must question whether that last bit about the dedication of servicemen is only a myth, at least in your case. Someone who truly believed he or she had fought to protect another person's liberty wouldn't dare insult fellow Americans by dividing the "real Americans" from the others on the basis of ideology.

The Ritz Carlton runs an average of $792.00 a night. Staying there 6 months would cost $144,140.00, must be nice to be Harry Reid. Isn't his annual salary $194,000.00 a year? Why yes it is. Does anyone else feel secure enough with their job to spend their entire annual salary, just on a place to stay? This does not include room service. Just to sleep in the room. 9 months of staying at Ritz Carlton - $216,200.00. Yes he is just the "common man". What a joke. How can anyone defend his reckless spending with our tax dollars? How about an investigation - this is simple observation and googling how much it costs to get a room at the Ritz. Where is our oversight of elected officials?

"I think that two wrongs don't make a right. And I have been in the situation of counseling young girls, not 13 but 15, who have had very at risk, difficult pregnancies. And my counsel was to look for some alternatives, which they did. And they found that they had made what was really a lemon situation into lemonade." --Sharron Angle, explaining why she is against abortion even in cases of rape or incest, July 8, 2010

RENO: moderate to you means liberal. conservative to us means conservative. if i want a liberal representing me, i'll vote for sue lowden, or dawn gibbons, or bill raggio, or sig rogich, or frank farenkoph, or any of the other "moderates" who have shown their true colors.

I am not here supporting Reid or illegal’s. I am saying to teabaggers what needs to be said. That movement is total travesty. Clowns running around in funny hats carrying AR15's to town hall meetings and disrupting what should have been a civil discourse. Giving us those memorable quotes like "keep the government out of Medicare". Making and displaying racist's posters and THEN looking us in the eye and telling us they are not bigots. Now is that a false statement? If you think it is--you didn't watch the news last year. If you want your children taught that fossils are a test of our faith and that man hunted dinosaurs-put them in a private school and brainwash them-don't think for a second I'm going to let that happen without an argument. This ain't about taxes or Harry Reid-It is about whether we let the far religious Right gain enough power to change our system of government and education or if we don't.

All of the pundits who have predicted a GOP sweep in November have overlooked one important thing-you conservatives have kicked moderate Republicans to the curb-you insult them with the moniker-Rino-and consider them traitor's. How are moderate Republicans going to vote? Think moderate Republicans want women back in the kitchen? Think moderate Republicans want text books rewritten with evolution removed? Think moderate Republicans want prayer in school? Whose prayers? Think moderate Republicans are watching g beck? Think moderate Republicans agree with the "lemonade from lemons" statement? Moderate Republicans are not going to vote for Angle-and you in the teaparty have yourselves to thank for that.

This election COULD have been about Dem's vs. the GOP but it's progressed WAY beyond that now. Ried and Angle are bystanders really. Now it's about whether WE let the neocons or teaparty or right-wing religious zealots rule our lives or not. Women: do you really want to told your rape was "Gods plan". Father's:Do you want "creation science" taught to your children instead of evolution? Parents: do you want your children being instructed on what to pray in public schools? Moderate's: do you really think gays in the military or getting married is a problem so insidious that it will"ruin" America? THAT'S WHAT THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT! Make NO mistake this ain't about to much spending-It's the last gasp of the religious-rights attempt to force it's beliefs onto us.

The teaparty can ruin all the primaries it wants. It was the best primary season the Democrats could have hoped for. -Just don't expect moderate people to vote for the teaparty whaco's in the general. Ain't gonna happened. Moderates don't much like the idea of their children being taught the Earth is 6000 years old and that man hunted dinosaurs. Rational people think fossils ARE FOSSILS-- rational moderates do not think evolution is some kind of a leftest, Marxist, commie plot. We think it is science. You are free to worship however you wish-You are NOT free to force your beliefs on my children or my government.

Rove and the Prospergroup want Angle to stay focused on the economy: But it's just to darn hard to remain focused -----what with all the commies and anchor babies running around. And gays wanting to marry-WOW there's a major problem-forget the economy we gotta stop these gay guys from taking over! Wait Wait!! What if a gay anchor baby grew up and became a commie? Wait-A gay commie terrorist anchor baby that will probably become an abortion doctor! Thank God the teaparty is here watching out for us all!
