RENO - The Reno City Council has agreed to pay $50,000 to a man arrested in 2005 for allegedly violating a restraining order that a judge hadn't issued.
The payment agreed to Wednesday settles a federal lawsuit brought against the city by Robert B. Wheeler Sr. A trial had been scheduled for this month.
Wheeler was arrested in 2005 by an officer who had been on the job for about a month. Earlier that day Wheeler's estranged wife had told police he threatened her.
She showed the officer an application for a temporary restraining order. The officer said the woman told him Wheeler had been served.
Wheeler also had a pending application for a restraining order against his wife.
Wheeler's lawyers have said he was wrongfully jailed for more than three weeks.
