DOUG ELFMAN: Skateboard star has cause

The Wynn stages a big event that has slipped under the radar but features Tony Hawk, a punk show by Rancid, plus appearances by Andre Agassi, a UFC crew (Chuck Liddell, Frank Mir and Gray Maynard), plus the oft-naked Holly Madison and Aubrey O'Day, skateboarding and BMX icons from Bucky Lasek to Matt Hoffman, and actor Erik Estrada.

This is Hawk's Stand Up For Skateparks, raising money for skate parks in Vegas and elsewhere for "at-risk youths."

  • People who go (noon-4 p.m.) can check out half-pipe action and other sports moves and preview-play the new video game "Tony Hawk: Ride."

    It's a big ticket: $350. Check StandUpForSkateParks.org.

    • The Playground/Crazy Horse III strip club complex is inaugurating an intimate, 200-person rock club called Dead Man's Hand.

There's no gambling, thus no gambling-related restrictions on nudity. Ergo, The Playground is the only place in Vegas where you can see rock names performing in small room with mostly naked strippers.

    And admission is free.

So at 11 p.m. tonight, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan performs with rock buddies.

And Saturday, The Playground stages an 8 p.m. comedy show followed by an 11 p.m. concert from an "all-star" group including drummer Slim Jim from Stray Cats and guitarist-singer Eric Dover of Jellyfish.

Also on Saturday's guest list (for a Bluff magazine event): porn star Tera Patrick (newly single) and former Pantera pounder Vinnie Paul. For more, check out PlaygroundLV.com.

    • The Latin Grammys (last night at Mandalay Bay, broadcast on Univision) brought a world of Latino stars to town, plus their fans.

This was a boost for Vegas. Tourist numbers died two Tuesdays ago, was anemic Monday, but was huge by Thursday, in no small part because of the Latin Grammys.

Before the awards started, stars filed into a secret room inside THE Hotel to pick up celebrity gift bags: Jackie Guerra, Alejandro Sanz, Aaron Diaz, David Bisbal, Alejandra Guzman, Natalia Jimenez, Juan Luis Guerra, Calle 13, Ruben Blades, Juan Gabriel and Alicia Keys.

Some gifts they got (overseen as usual by Lash Fary's Distinctive Assets):

A $2,000 credit for Botox and other treatments at California's HealthCare Partners day spa; VIP stays at the Palms, plus private tours of the Palms recording studio.

Favorite: A soy candle company called Soy Delicious (translation: "I'm Delicious") was started by two Miami teachers (not rich, just inspired) because one teacher's husband and kids had severe reactions to regular candles. Their candles burn soy, smell great and don't turn to wax, but burn into hot massage oil for lovers. (It was tested on me.)

Sal wrote on November 08, 2009 03:55 AM: I saw Holly Madison in Peepshow last week. What a disappointment she was. The show was excellent but Holly Madison has no talent and no sex appeal. It takes more then fake breast to arouse me and Holly Madison just doesn't have it.

I don’t see why they extended her contract. I bet Heffner has his hand in that.

Holly Madison is nothing more than a blow up doll that doesn't know how to move well.

The kids need this skate park or any skate park when they live in Las Vegas, there is to much negatitity for young boys and girls, skate boarding is an awsome diversion.

Besh Cooper wrote on November 06, 2009 04:31 PM: VP is right that minimum ticket price is INSANE.

And I have like Rancid for years and years but to still say they are a punk rock band does not hold water.
They are a rock band that plays punk styled music.
Punk rock is not played at little gatherings for the affluent.
I am sure that those guys know that too, but we are all getting old and I am sure they could use the $$ and the star treatment.

Hawk_for_President wrote on November 06, 2009 10:57 AM: Tony represents everything that is GOOD about this country. Tony is all about innovation and creating his own opportunities. No college degree or special pedigree required.

One other thing. I take my young boys to skateboard parks. By and large, the older boarders -- you know, the ones who look like punks -- are the NICEST guys you'll ever meet. They lookout for kids, offer tips, render first aid, and so forth.

    THANK YOU TONY HAWK.

VP wrote on November 06, 2009 09:01 AM: You know Tony Hawk could raise a hell of a lot more money if he cut down that outrageous cost... I love watching skateboarders and BMX riders, and I'm all for more skateparks around the nation, but there's no way that i'm going to spend that much money.
