NORM: Was Agassi's wig an open secret?

Maybe Andre Agassi's infamous mullet hairpiece wasn't such a big secret after all.

Someone was dropping a big hint about the time Agassi started wearing the wig from Hair Club for Men in New York City.

  • The following query appeared in the Dec. 9, 1990, issue of Walter Scott's Personality Parade in Parade magazine:

"Who is the male tennis star who wears a wig to avoid the girlish autograph hounds who pester him? Could he possibly be Andre Agassi?"

It was signed "Charlene Harris, Las Vegas" and, judging from the tone, it sounded more like someone with inside information than a question.

I called information this week in an attempt to reach Harris for a comment, but she wasn't listed.

And how did Scott, a Beverly Hills, Calif.-based celebrity reporter, respond?

He wrote: "Andre Agassi, 20, wears some pretty outlandish costumes both on and off the tennis court, but to date has refrained from donning a wig. Boris Becker, 22, the German racket-wielder, however, is one tennis ace who reportedly has worn a wig to avoid identification by his followers."

In his new memoir, "Open," Agassi revealed that the toupee began disintegrating after a shampooing the night before he lost the 1990 French Open final to Andres Gomez. He used hairpins to keep it from coming apart on the court.

    LOCAL GIRL MAKES GOOD

Jacquie Barnbrook, Bishop Gorman Class of 1982, has become a Jacquie of all trades in Hollywood.

She's back in the U.S. to visit her family for Thanksgiving after an overseas stint while working on the "Sex and the City" sequel as a visual effects producer.

She's also staying involved in acting and played Mrs. Fezziwig in "Disney's A Christmas Carol" with Jim Carrey and has a part in Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Life of the Unicorn."

In 2002, she was a producer of the Oscar-winning animated short film "The ChubbChubbs," a Sony Pictures spinoff.

    THE SCENE AND HEARD

"Good Morning America" will be on Fremont Street on Dec. 4 with Sam Champion during a two-hour broadcast. "GMA" will be spotlighting holiday lighting events across the country, with the finale in Las Vegas.

Former UNLV standout Sequoia Holmes jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to a 21-11 win over sports talk-show host Pauly Howard in their Battle of the Sexes on Tuesday. She's a member of the WNBA's Detroit Shock. Howard, who jumps back and forth between KWNN-AM, 1100, and KBAD-AM, 920, is saying he proved his point. He had not played any organized ball.
