EDITORIAL: Immigration arrests

Feds clamp down on Reno-area McDonald's restaurants

The writing was on the wall. The Bush administration has made it clear that because Congress failed to pass new immigration laws, federal authorities have no choice but to strictly enforce existing statutes. That means identifying companies with employees working under false Social Security numbers. That means carrying out targeted investigations.

That means making arrests.

  • On Thursday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents served search warrants at 11 McDonald's restaurants in Reno, Sparks and Fernley and a franchise office in Reno. At least 56 workers were arrested on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

For the interest groups that have fervently defended the rights of foreign nationals to enter the United States and work in jobs that might otherwise be filled by citizens, the action was cause for outrage.

"We don't approve of the Gestapo methods ICE is using," said Reno-area Latino advocate Gilbert Cortez. Never mind that all of the suspected illegal immigrants will enjoy the due process protections provided by the Constitution.

"ICE raids are unproductive because they lock up individuals with no criminal history and warehouse them in detention centers," said Lee Rowland, Northern Nevada coordinator for the state ACLU. Would Ms. Rowland recommend that all first-time offenders be given a free pass out of jail?

"I don't know in this particular instance, but I think as a general rule, to terrorize a community is a way of violating somebody's civil rights," said Vito De La Cruz, a federal public defender. Enforcing existing immigration law constitutes terrorism and civil rights violations? Please.

But this was no raid prompted by the purchase of a bad hamburger. Authorities uncovered enough evidence to obtain search warrants and justify arrests. These are "Gestapo methods"?

"There's got to be a better way to handle this," Reno Mayor Bob Cashell said.

When local law enforcement agencies refuse to check immigration status on drunken drivers, robbers and wife beaters, when illegal immigrants crash uninsured vehicles into law-abiding citizens and are allowed to walk away from the scene of an accident with nothing more than a couple of tickets, there's only one alternative: going to the places where illegals work under fraudulent documentation and, if the evidence supports it, arresting suspects.

Unless, of course, Mayor Cashell, Mr. Cortez, Ms. Rowland and Mr. De La Cruz advocate declaring all places of employment "safe havens" for illegals, as well.

They are trying to drum up enough sympathy, so that one of these times the voice of Americans will not be loud enough to stop amnesty when Washington tries to pass it again. After the first time trying to pass AMNESTY, did Washington listen to Americans? NO, they brought it back with in a week. Now after the third time trying to pass AMNESTY, did they say we heard the AMERICAN people and will let AMNESTY DEI? NO, Reid said we will bring it back as a stand alone bill!

That being said, however, I don't understand why we have laws if we don't enforce them. If we allow immigrants to flaunt our laws then we shouldn't be surprised when everyone - immigrant or not - gets the idea that laws are simply suggestions.

Let's provide an easier way for people to come here legally. Immigration has always been good for this country. Until we can do that, though, we have to enforce the laws we have. If you believe the current laws are flawed we have a tradition of civil disobedience in this country. But that means standing up and accepting the punishment that comes with the conduct, not looking for ways to avoid consequences. Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King spent time in jail protesting unjust laws. It was their willingness to do so that brought others around to their way of thinking. Calling our law enforcement officials Nazis for executing legally obtained search warrants is no way to score points.

ROFLMAO over this one. This OP-ED hit the nail on the head. It does seem that jobs are the havens for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Press one for English--how did we, as Americans, let them get by with making this a bi-lingual country?

"We don't approve of the Gestapo methods ICE is using," said Reno-area Latino advocate Gilbert Cortez. It amazes me that illegal immigrants come her and want it both ways--to work here illegally but yet not suffer the consequences that the rest of Americans would suffer.

BTW, don't use that racist crap on me, America is not a race but a culture. Call me a culturist, but not a racist! Come to America legally and become an American, speak English, and pay taxes--legally!

They couldn't claim overcrowding because most of them live in large groups in small apartments, so they are used to it.

These people came across our border illegally--therefore they have committed a crime. They are criminals. I just don't understand how normally intelligent people don't get it. Sneaking over our border is against the law--anyone who does it is subject to arrest.

Richard wrote on September 29, 2007 07:11 AM: Practically speaking, it wasn't so much the lack of Congressional action that spurred the administration to action. It was the outcry from constituents across the country that action was needed that awakened politicians of both parties to demand in panic that something be done. Had the two Bush's and Clinton enforced the law as they should have, there would not be the sudden realization of the impact on schools, health care, law enforcement, etc. that is now apparent. And there would not have been the sudden trauma that causes supporters of illegals to cry discrimination, racism and profiling among other alleged transgressions. The process is going to be slow, but the message must be delivered that illegal means illegal, and that the status quo will no longer be tolerated. And it will require determination by politicians of all parties to fend off the attacks and calumny that will now be heaped upon them. Not to mention the spate of well funded lawsuits that will emerge in opposition to enforcing the law. And, not to mention the heat local officials will now feel to participate in the solution, instead of hiding behind the claim that it is the Fed's problem.

Don't be fooled , ICE is just playing everbody for suckers , They bust 54 , release 30 back into society with a court order , 30 juans just get new fake id and become 30 joses.

Eric wrote on September 29, 2007 07:03 AM: Bravo for ICE, keep up the good work and don't have a meltdown because of pressure from the people who are profitering due to illegal imigrants. As long as due process is followed you have the support that you need, keep up the GOOD work.
