EDITORIAL: Golden parachute

North Las Vegas is in the market for a new police chief, and it won't come cheap for the city's taxpayers.

Mayor Michael Montandon confirmed Tuesday that the city is coming up with a severance package for Mark Paresi, North Las Vegas' top cop for more than five years. Until that's finalized, Mr. Paresi will be on paid leave, collecting his weekly salary of more than $3,000. Assistant Chief Joseph Chronister runs the department.

  • Why the pressing need for a change? No one with the city is offering specifics.

    "You can't portray this as a firing, but he is leaving," Mayor Montandon told the Review-Journal. It was a combination of "policy, human resources and personal issues," and issues "we've been trying to work out, and we just can't."

    Added Councilwoman Stephanie Smith: "Everybody has their strong points and weaknesses, and unless they've done something that's egregious or a violation of the public trust, you don't need every piece of your dirty linen aired."

    OK. But when you're preparing a golden parachute for someone you recruited from out of town only five years ago to take the Police Department in a new direction, you have to be a little more forthcoming with the people paying the bill.

    What, exactly, couldn't be "worked out"? And why might city taxpayers be on the hook for a six-figure farewell paycheck for Mr. Paresi if he had "policy, human resources and personal issues"?

    It isn't about airing dirty laundry. City residents need to know whether their elected and appointed leaders are capable of hiring a competent, appropriate replacement for Mr. Paresi -- one that won't be out of the job with another severance package in a couple of years.

    North Las Vegas officials should offer a better explanation for this situation than the non-answers they've given so far.

    cas127 wrote on November 01, 2007 04:50 PM: Why not post this joker's employment contract online so we can all see how NLV gave away the farm when they "negotiated" to get him in the first place. The contract must be public information.

    Post it and I bet your readership will uncover the mystery before the week is out.


    douglas wrote on November 01, 2007 02:53 PM: what'd be cool is that if the "progressive" party installs a free/national health for anyone who might be standing in the u.s.... that health coverage must be applied to *all* u.s. citizens. this would include those presently under some union contract and more importantly, *all* government employees and elected officials. to exempt anyone from the "national" health program discriminates against those individuals who must stand in line. that means if i have to discard my present coverage for which i pay, i expect that all other citizens will be on equal footing, receive equal quality and timeliness of medical services. after all, the communist cuba's national health is so good that el fidelo flew to spain for his procedures. apparently *some* individuals are more equal than others.

    thus we could see the state, county, city, and federal officials waiting their turn on the bench at the public clinic. if the first hundred [thousand ?] "patients" in line were infiltrators, drug overdosers, homeless [by choice], america's most wanted, escaped prisoners, child diddlers, those with multiple dui convictions, applicants for the free gender "correction"... so be it.

    John wrote on November 01, 2007 02:12 PM: My guesses are a) a settlement came of a retaliation lawsuit filed against the city by 2 female officers who settled a sexual harassment suit. or b) the fact that while they get 1800 interested parties at recruitment fairs, only 400 apply for the test, 200 take it and 14 get hired isn't sufficient for the powers that be.


    NLV Resident wrote on November 01, 2007 01:47 PM: I thought Paresi should have been tossed when he claimed the dept didn't know there were 6 sex offenders living in the same house on Colton, even though each one had registered and the State Dept of P&P had authorized the transition housing. During the public meetings, Paresi kept saying the NLVPD was unaware of the transition home or that there were several sex offenders residing there. If that were true, he should have been tossed right then and there. But, I don't believe any "public servant" is entitled to a golden parachute other than accrued vacation and/or retirement. He leaves as any other employee would leave. And when it comes time to vote for the city council, I'll remember this and vote to remove them all, including the Mayor. Now, NLV taxpayers have to pay to recruit and relocate someone new and, no doubt, at an even HIGHER salary.

    I agree wholeheartedly, especially in the wake of this ridiculous contract given to the city manager. The decision-making abilities of our elected leaders is in need of a serious reassessment.
