EDITORIAL: Nevada tops in population growth

Is that good? Well, would you rather be in Michigan?

Those agitating for higher taxes in Nevada like to recite the state's low ranking on a litany of "social" indices, which they regard as evidence that we live in something akin to a Third World hellhole.

Of course, they prefer to ignore that the Silver State is consistently among the leaders in a number of state rankings, including those measuring job growth, employment, entrepreneurial opportunities and tax climate.

So it should come as no surprise that on Wednesday, the Census Bureau featured Nevada at the top of its list for population growth during the fiscal year that ended July 1. The state's population grew by 2.9 percent to an estimated 2.56 million.

Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Georgia rounded out the top five -- and it's no coincidence that they all have relatively low-tax environments.

  • New York led the bottom five and was followed by Vermont, Ohio, Michigan and Rhode Island -- and it's no coincidence that they all feature relatively high-tax, anti-business environments.

Michigan and Rhode Island actually lost residents over the past year.

The bureau's numbers are calculated by examining births, deaths and migration into and out of each state.

Most of Nevada's growth is occurring in Las Vegas, of course. And with several new properties slated to open on the Strip over the next few years, there's no indication the state's expansion will slow.

But the influx of new residents -- even if it highlights the state's friendly business climate -- doesn't sit well with everyone. "Just getting bigger is kind of like sitting around the table after Christmas dinner," said Keith Schwer, a UNLV economist. "Getting bigger doesn't mean you're better off."

Perhaps. But would you rather live in Michigan, where stifling taxes and labor laws have laid waste to a once-vibrant economy and sent even longtime residents fleeing for more hospitable climes? Or would you prefer Nevada, where jobs and opportunity are plentiful?

It appears that Americans are voting with their feet.

So which valet parker, maid, waitress where you not refereeing to. It seems to me your statement is very general.

I guess we could say too many CEO’s and other executives tend to feel everyone else’s money should be theirs, such as Enron’s Kenneth Lay, Tyco, war profiteers like Blackwater, all of our educated congress and the list could go on for ever.

To the public in general the crimes these educated commit do more harm and steal more from hard working Americans truly affecting society more.

So which lifestyle is worse? The greedy educated or the less educated?
    In general of course.
Wow I guess round one was your way of intelligent humor.

Fausto wrote on December 29, 2007 09:21 PM: "You are completely ignorant labeling all uneducated as having a low grade lifestyle"

Joe: You label me ignorant because you claim I labeled *all* "uneducated". Please go back and actually read what I wrote...specifically..."tend to". That does not equal *all*.

    Thanks for playing this round!

when the bleeding from illegal infiltration is clotted, let's see just how far in the hole might be any/all budgets.

until those gubmit authorities cleanse their programs from ineligible, infiltrators, they discard the ability to complain about any shortfall. if the shopkeeper leaves the cash drawer open to the public, he discards his ability to complain to the police about missing cash.

I guess if you consider an infrastructure that is feasible to take care of the growth a progressive program, that is probably what it is. The more the population progresses, the more infrastructure we need. So far as I can see, there are several ways to to cope with this problem. 1. Pray for a miracle. 2. Acquire money to pay for the infrastructure through more taxes. 3. Let the intities that require all the support to run their operations step up to the plate. I know it might not be fair in some peoples minds, but it will always be unfair in some peoples minds. If these intities can support businesses in foreign countries, they should be able to support the infrastructures that made them wealthy enough to expand worldwide.
Our Federal Government can't afford to build our own infrastructures, as they are busy building foreign countries infrastructures.
You are probably right about Obama (Osama,or whatever you want to call him)being a better choice than Clinton. The sad part about this is the choices we have. From what I see, all the politicians are doing exactly what you stated,ie. spinning, waffling, and crafting responses, sad but true, that's what politicians do.

douglas wrote on December 29, 2007 11:52 AM: those who by word or deed continually snivel for more spending on "progressive" [read, giveway] programs are the problem, not part of any solution.

if the show fits, wear it. to spin or slink away from a previous position is less than honorable. that's why even the avowed leftist, barack osama is a better choice than ms clinton. osama, like the decedent gus hall, is direct in his political slant. ms clinton like her husband, is continually spinning, waffling, crafting responses to direct questions to suit her audience at the time. between those two, it sounds like osama would continue on his stated agenda. why would anyone conclude that the others, ms clinton et alii, all of a sudden, get honorable when elected ?

Speaking for myself, I did not call for higher taxes. In fact, I specifically stated that I wasn't doing that. What I did say is that the RJ editors draw a conclusion that the evidence does not support.

More people move to California than leave. Is that evidence that we should adopt California's tax structure? Of course not. So why is the fact that more people move here than leave evidence that others should adopt our tax structure?

If you are indeed educated you are proof that education doesn’t concur intelligence. You are completely ignorant labeling all uneducated as having a low grade lifestyle, when actually making a good wage raises your lifestyle and enables parents to send they’re children to college, only good can come from fair wages in a society.
While there is a huge attempt to keep wages low by big business exploiting illegal aliens and in the end U.S. citizens; too many of our educated claiming to be so politically correct and oh-so tolerant have no problem with demeaning and subjugating the less educated if they are citizens or illegal aliens.
You my friend need to get back to school and back on your medications.

douglas wrote on December 29, 2007 09:45 AM: low taxes are the prime reason i and dozens of acquaintances had moved to nevada. it's not the 115+ degree summer temps. it's not some belief that jobs pay more in recreational areas... in many areas of the world, retirees would mostly work for free just because of the recreational activities at hand. usta see that in hawaii.

population increases expressed by actual numbers or percentages, what's the diff ? the feeble minded would dwell on the calcs. bottom line is more people move here [legal u.s. citizens] than leave.

as the "boomers" retire, they are wise to acquire residency in states with no income tax. relative to states with ever expanding tax black holes like california and new york, nevada residency gains new retirees 5-10% in added net income from 401k's, personal and private pension funds.

apparently the leftist/"progressive" agenda is to pump up the tax burden on nevada workers and pensioners to reward bums and illegal infiltrators.

It is a Third World hellhole from this perspective...the number of dumb, uneducated people to which Las Vegas is like a magnet to. It is positive to be a market where uneducated people can come and make a good wage parking cars or cleaning tables...but those uneducated people tend to bring their low-grade lifestyle with them.

How dare you attack Pat Mulroy! Why, she is the 2nd smartest woman in this world...right behing Hillary Rodham Clinton (notice how the Rodham has been dropped recently?). Not nearly as smart as Randy Walker, but she's smart.
