SHERMAN FREDERICK: Right on the button

On finances and voter fraud

I don't wish to overstate my powers, but it must be said -- and I'm just the guy to do it! -- that my last two Sunday columns have been, well, downright ouija-like.

First came the prediction of a financial storm facing state and local governments in Nevada. For decades politicians have allowed the costs of our public employee union contracts to get away from the taxpayers' ability to pay for them. It reached a breaking point when times were good. Now, in a down economy, these failures spell big trouble. I think my exact admonition to our elected officials was: "Stop burning taxpayer money."

Most Popular Stories
  1. Judging a judge
  2. Open ... and shut
  3. A lottery would raise money for education
  4. Only the private sector can create wealth
  5. Net neutrality
  6. Open court

Since that column, the stock market has swooned a couple thousand points, worldwide banking is broken and California, along with other states and cities, is begging for short-term money to make payroll.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

Pay attention, state legislators, mayors, school board members, regents and county commissioners: This is serious. If you don't want to preside over the largest layoff of government workers in state history, get control of employee contracts and watch every penny of citizen money you spend. You're going to need efficiency like never before.

Then last week I penned a little ditty headlined "Voter fraud in Las Vegas?" Again, I don't want to overplay my role in the cosmic scale of things. It was just a question sparked by a reader who noticed peculiar things with voter materials addressed to his children, who had left Nevada years ago.

Within days of the column, Nevada officials raided the local office of ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Supposedly, the ACORN people were doing all kinds of bad things (illegal voter registration) in the name of a good thing (getting people registered).

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of suspicious "voters" were registered by ACORNians, including the attempted registration of members of the Dallas Cowboys football team, featuring quarterback Tony Romo.

ACORNians say they're just doing the Lord's work (who they swear is a Democrat, by the way). They say they tried to warn officials about the potentially fake registrations they were turning in ... but nobody -- nobody! -- would listen.

Let me tell you, that defense is stuffed fuller than a Christmas turkey.

Everywhere ACORN goes, suspicious registrations increase. It's time to start calling this behavior what it is: organized crime. It is, after all, organized. And it's criminal.

But because registering voters is supposed to be a positive endeavor, no one calls them on it when they break the law.

Look, ladies and gents, voting is a wonderful thing. Everyone who wants to, regardless of political bent, should vote. But ACORN is out to game the system. They know full well what they are doing. And what makes this criminal behavior even worse: Taxpayer money is given to ACORN. Presidential candidate Barack Obama (likely our next president) was once ACORN's lawyer, and as a community organizer he even trained ACORNians to do what they do.

That's ugly from every angle.

ACORNians who engage in illegal voter registration activity ought to go to jail for a long, long time.

You no doubt marvel at my predicting the global economic crisis and its effect on state and local government budgets, as well as sensing systematic voter fraud right here in Las Vegas.

But I must confess: I hate it when I'm scary right.

Scott De Jack wrote on October 13, 2008 10:10 PM: Well Sherman, this time your fantastic imagination really has taken the proverbial cake! ACORN is not a "Democratic" bureaucracy...NOPE, they're a gov't funded voter registration machine.
Also, although you're almost right, except for the lie- Senator Obama's Law Firm did represent ACORN back in 1995 *(that's like 13 years ago, even if you're a dog) but Senator Obama didn't "train Acornians" to do what they do...ever. That part is not true- at all in fact it turns out it's John McCain who has the real ACORN connection!! Too funny, right Sherman?!

McCain has a recent - and real - association with ACORN, unlike the trumped up charges against Obama and his association with ACORN.
McCain was the keynote speaker at an ACORN rally in Miami in February 2006 and partnered with them on immigration issues. The rally was intended to call attention to the need for comprehensive immigration reform and was attended by hundreds of ACORN members. In the bizarro world of McCain-Palin, it's ok for McCain to work with ACORN and speak at their conference but it's treason for Obama to have no connection to them whatsoever except that in 1995, his law firm was retained to represent ACORN in lawsuit. Bertha Lewis, Chief Organizer of ACORN, released a statement today saying, "It has deeply saddened us o see Senator McCain abandon his historic support for ACORN and our efforts to support the goals of low-income Americans. Maybe it is out of desperation that Senator McCain has forgotten that he was for ACORN before he was against ACORN; he was for immigration reform before he was against immigration reform; and he was a maverick before he became erratic. We were thrilled to partner with him to help reform the outdated immigration laws in this country, and were pleased to work closely with him on this issue."

Any of you note Obama has changed the wording on his "Fight The Smears" web page? Obama is in a rush to cover his butt. In essence, Obama has admitted his lying to America about ACORN. There are many news reports available on this for readers to independently verify.

Obama is buying this election, actually, Obama is stealing this election through his paying ACORN to engage in voter fraud. My vote for McCain is stolen away by Obama. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been victimized by Obama stealing away their votes for McCain.

Obama knew, beforehand, ACORN has a very long history of voter fraud, a history of prior convictions, history of current ongoing voter fraud. Nonetheless, Obama hired ACORN to steal votes for him. This is not a good reflection on Obama's character nor his honesty.

Quite laughable all these Obamabots engaging in deep denial of Obama being a crooked politician.

This is certain, McCain has not and never would consider engaging in voter fraud.

Yes, Obama is running the dirtiest campaign of history, perhaps the most criminal campaign of history.

All hail the Black Messiah!

Why don't you join in the condemnation of ACORN for even allowing this to happen. If it was as insignificant as you say it is, then why did the DEMOCRAT Heller do the raid in the first place? Why then is ACORN under investigation in so many other states?

Can we just agree that this organization is committing fraud and it should cease receiving Tax Payer money? I would assume that if ACORN was registering Republican voters, you'd be the first in line with a pitchfork and a torch....

HELENWEILS wrote on October 12, 2008 04:58 PM: I'm watching Lou Dobbs on CNN right now and it's all about Acorn. Obama DID contribute $864,000 to Acorn to get registrations for them. In one of the
areas. Lakeside, out of 5,000 Acorn registrations that were turned in
ALL OF THEM, SO FAR ARE FALSE. I agree
with Sherm, this is a CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY
THAT SHOULD BE BUSTED. OBAMA HAS MANY CONNECTIONS TO ACORN. He worked for them,he trained lawyers to shake down the banks for loans for unqualified low
income and minority loans, aka subprime
loans. To look at the whole picture
of his background and his payment to
them for THIS campaign any REASONABLE
person would realize this is the truth.
I know that none of this makes any difference to Obama the Messiah fanatics
but IT IS TRUE AND PROVEABLE.
If you plan to endorse a man who is also endorsed by the head of Hamas (Palestian terrorist group), Louis Farrakan who exhorts his followers to
worship the Messiah Obama.

Mark Schaffer wrote on October 12, 2008 03:43 PM: I would like to amend my earlier statement as I have just watched a program on CSPAN where the interim director of ACORN explained that all workers are paid by the hour not by the number of registrations and that less than one half of one percent of registrations may have been fraudulent. RHG for it's part needs to understand that allegations of wrongdoing are not proof of wrongdoing but it's statement below would lead me to believe that it flunked out of logic class or is plainly stupid.

Steve Moore wrote on October 12, 2008 03:22 PM: Thank-you Sherm for pointing out what I thought was the case about ACORN and Barack Obama. I see all the information about the (very) questionable registrations on the TV but none that tie ACORN to Obama. Republicans however are villified for trying similar tactics by discouraging potential Democrat registrations in front of public buildings. Another thing-- To the pollsters-- The sign says "No Soliciting" don't ring the bell! Go away and bug someone else! You are soliciting by polling for anyone at all, I am not buying.

I know this is difficult for the looney tune right wing to understand but the system has worked and a small number of fake registrations have already been weeded out. The fake registrations were done by people because they made money based on how many voters they registered. None of these fakes made it onto the rolls. This is a classic case of making a mountain out of a molehill.
-------------
No, one of the points here is that after the 2000 election in which George Bush was declared the winner Democrats hollered constantly about voter fraud, voter intimidation and anything else they could come up with in an attempt to steal the election and put Al Gore in the White House. Now, we have a leftwing group caught committing voter fraud (in numerous states, not just NV) right before the 2008 prez election and the Democrats are now saying, "what's the big deal"? And the fact this group is using tax money to perpetrate this fraud should outrage everyone and that includes Democrats. Democrats are just unbelievable, anything and everything goes just as long as it benefits the Democrat party and its agenda.
