EDITORIAL: Leadership, consistency from Sen. Harry Reid

Spares Sen. Lieberman; John Ensign moves up in GOP ranks

The Democratic Party's fiercest partisans have been plotting their revenge against Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., for more than two years. His defense of the Iraq occupation and his 2006 election victory -- running as an Independent against his former party's anti-war nominee -- were tough medicine. His criticism of Barack Obama and proud support of GOP presidential nominee John McCain were the last straw.

Angry liberals were in agreement on the appropriate punishment: Sen. Lieberman's open disloyalty should cost him the chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.

  • All the while, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada urged restraint and reserved judgment.

"All my close votes, he's always with me, whether it's the budget or energy issues," Sen. Reid said in an August meeting with Review-Journal journalists. "No matter what it is, he's always with us. He just does not vote right on Iraq. ... Why would I want to throw away a good vote?"

In September, Sen. Reid insisted Sen. Lieberman's transgressions would be addressed in due course, warning zealots that driving him out of the party could cost the Democrats their 51-49 majority.

"The caucus has a decision to make, and they're going to make it," Sen. Reid said. "For those people beating up on Joe Lieberman -- I've done my share -- recognize the glass being half-full, not half-empty."

On Tuesday, with the far-left wing of the Democratic Party still demanding a pound of flesh, Sen. Reid stuck by his word. Re-elected majority leader, Sen. Reid allowed Sen. Lieberman to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.

Sen. Reid appeared to quell whatever hostility remained by allowing his caucus to pass a resolution condemning Sen. Lieberman's campaign statements against President-elect Obama and stripping Sen. Lieberman of the chairmanship of an Environment and Public Works subcommittee.

Sen. Reid's willingness to stand up to the yowling of unreasonable followers marks an encouraging start to his second go-round as Senate leader. We hope he can rein in what promises to be cornucopia of liberal legislation and look out for the interests of Nevada and its battered economy.

It goes without saying that Sen. Reid's return to the post of Senate majority leader is another boon for the Silver State.

His first session as leader, however, was marked by negativity and nastiness and brought some of the lowest approval ratings in the history of Congress. He'll need to display the kind of leadership he provided Tuesday if he expects Nevada voters to return him to office in 2010.

Meanwhile, the Senate's GOP minority on Tuesday saw fit to promote Nevada's John Ensign to the chairmanship of the Republican Policy Committee, the No. 4 position in the party's leadership. Sen. Ensign had chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the No. 5 post, which gave him the miserable task of trying to get GOP candidates elected in a year dominated by Democrats.

Sen. Ensign appears to have succeeded in preventing Democrats from winning a filibuster-proof Senate majority. Now he'll have a big role in retooling Republican policy priorities and legislative strategies.

The Republican Party must return to the fundamentals of limited government and fiscal responsibility if it hopes to have any chance in future elections, and Sen. Ensign, one of the most principled conservatives remaining in the upper chamber, is the right person to help lead it back to relevance.

Tuesday's news from Washington provided more proof that Sen. Reid and Sen. Ensign have become the most formidable Nevada delegation in state history.

We get that you are glued to your tube. But since when did the Fox "News" Channel and MSNBC become barometers for equitability in political reporting?

You still haven't tuned into AM radio: it's all attack Obama or any other democrat, all the time.

You are still an idiot in need of double doses of Aricept, especially given your locale North of Lake Mead.

    Oy vey.

I had to repeat this cause it made me laugh out loud:

"I don't watch Fox news but at least they present conservative and liberal opinions."

I mean...are you serious? "You don't watch", but yet you know? And how would that be, because you watch commercials for Fox and they tell you its so?

    LOL

    Thanks again.

You funny you know; you talk about both parties being unfair, then the example you come up with is in regards to the Democrats treatment of Leiberman. How's about the republicans treatment of Colin Powell after he spoke out against the war? How about the republicans treatment of Paul O'neil after he came out against bush's handling of the war/economy? How about the republicans treatment of Scott McClellen after he came out and said some negative things about bush?

You consistently paint the democrats as the party being unfair, or being to blame, all the while "claiming" that both parties should share the blame. If you really serious about your claimed objectivity then talk some smack about the republicans once in a while. Lets hear a "bush is a criminal and should be in jail" Or Cheney has tried to turn this country into a fascist dictatorship under his feigned "unitary president" theory. Or how about Paulson has ruined the economy with his lowering of the reserve requirement on his buddies in the investment banking industry.

I mean, if you really think both parties are "equally" to blame for things, wouldn't it be appropriate to come out against the republicans that are parties ONCE in a while?

So repeat after me, "bush is a criminal and should be imprisoned".

Then, I assure you, I will step up to the plate and follow up with names of democrats that should follow. How 'bout it?

Your last post shows your complete ignorance. Even MSNBC stated they were extremely left-wing all the time. People like you are a perfect example of why everyone shouldn't be allowed to vote because they aren't intelligent enough. There was a documentary done after the elections and 60% (yes that's right 60%) of the voters who voted for Obama didn't even know who was in control of Congress. I don't watch Fox news but at least they present conservative and liberal opinions.

Sad Summerlin wrote on November 19, 2008 05:06 PM: honesty - empirical evidence from the last election:

The independent Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism looked at coverage in the six weeks following the conventions through the final debate and found on FOX News 40 percent of stories on John McCain were negative, while 40 percent of stories on Obama were also negative.

In contrast, on MSNBC the study found that 73 percent of stories on McCain were negative while Obama received just 14 percent negative coverage on that channel.

Can that be any more balanced for Fox and any more one sided for MSNBC?

I guess this is just a matter of perspective... since we are so used to seeing "lefties" as you put it on MSNBC etc, any that presents balanced coverage must appear "right"...

I do, however, agree 100% with your statement that both parties have made it impossible to disagree respectfully. Our government has lost it... leading America has turned into a contest between Democrats and Republicans on who can beat who... this is why the Lieberman thing rings so much more true... he is looked at as a traitor because he helped the Republicans, even if he was doing what he thought right...

You and I are also agreed, I don't support Lieberman at all... but I wouldn't go as far as to call him a traitor or want him treated unfairly for standing up for his beliefs...

I believe each party is guilty of this by the way... which is why this last election was so shameful and still continues in MN and GA to be shameful...

Sad Summerlin wrote on November 19, 2008 03:33 PM: So the Democratic Party abandons Lieberman in Connecticut because Lieberman supports the Iraq War. This is probably the only key issue that Lieberman disagrees with Harry Reid and the rest of the Democrats. Aside from Barack Obama, Liberman's track record is one of the most liberal in the Senate (except the War)...

So the party abandons him. He still wins... and still votes and caucuses with the Democrats out of loyalty.

But since he has an independent thought from the "party" mentality, he is labeled a traitor and is asked to be skewered...

Excuse, me... but aren't our politicians expected to do what is right in their minds to their constituents? Are all of our politicians expected to be mindless sheep that agree with everything the party leadership has to say? I guess if you are in a communist society and need a dictator to make your decisions, the answer is true. But this is America... we welcome dissent and debate and are stronger because of it...

And imagine that... I don't vote Democrat. Would NOT vote for Lieberman. And do NOT watch Fox News (like that is some kind of poison or something)...

You are the one who should try reading the news. Not the trash put out by CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, etc. Lieberman never lied about anything. Although Reid is one of the worst human beings (if he is one) on this planet, he will be sent back to the Senate in 2010 by a landslide because it was proven in this election cycle that the American voter, generally, is completely ignorant of the facts.
