EDITORIAL: Stimulating pork

Bill is beyond larded up

President Obama hailed the House last week for passing the $825 billion "stimulus" package. He has been outspoken in urging Congress to move quickly on the issue.

In fact, though, taxpayers deserve a closer examination of the bill's details -- and this president's actions on the bill will go a long way toward revealing his true commitment to fighting pork, earmarks and other wasteful nonsense.

  • The Associated Press notes some of the fine print in the House "stimulus" bill:

-- $345 million for Agriculture Department computers.

-- $650 million for TV converter boxes.

-- $15 billion for college grants.

-- $1 billion to deal with Census problems.

-- $870 million to combat the flu.

-- $88 million to provide a new building for the Public Health Service.

The list of pig slop goes on and on. It's even too much for some Democrats to bear.

"I have communicated to the administration," said Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D., "that there are parts of this package that don't meet the test that they themselves established of temporary, timely and targeted."

    No kidding?

And then there's the $1 billion for Amtrak, $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and $252 billion for wealth transfer schemes -- in other words, welfare -- highlighted Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, which calculated that maybe $90 billion of the package could "plausibly be considered a growth stimulus."

    The rest?

"This bill was written based on the wish list of every living -- or dead -- Democratic interest group," the Journal argues.

Not a single House Republican supported the package, which passed the lower chamber 244-188, with 11 Democrats joining their GOP colleagues. Senate Republicans should -- at the very least -- insist that this spending free-for-all be stripped of the out-and-out pork and include more than a nod to the idea that tax cuts are a better means of reviving the economy than returning to the Keynesian prescription popular in the 1930s.

Less than nine weeks ago, USA Today reported that "Obama vows to slash wasteful federal spending." Now he wants to shower billions and billions on welfare recipients, Amtrak, analog TV converter boxes and Census problems in the name of economic "stimulus"?

    That certainly didn't take long.

Bring back Reagan! wrote on February 07, 2009 03:09 PM: Ronald Reagan was the best and greatest President we had during the 20th Century. Why aren't we following his path to put our ship of state back on course. The problem is the Democrats who continue to spend, spend, spend on totally useless and unworthy projects. This country must get rid of the Federal Income Tax on wages to put the money where it will be used best -- in the workers' pockets. Of course, demanding the Fed's abolish all wages taxes gives Americans the freedom envisioned by the Founding Fathers, and that's the rub with D.C. These lousy politicians want to control your life and they do it through the slavery of wage taxes. Abolish it. Do it now. Make it happen.

SamT wrote on February 02, 2009 08:40 PM: @Sean: To answer your question, "Where's the Pork?"

    It's between your ears.

Sean wrote on February 02, 2009 06:10 PM: Define pork? I see jobs. Not pork. From what I understand pork is when a politician brings home the bacon to his or her district, such as building the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland. But the items listed don't have a certain county tied to them and they all create jobs.

Such as $345 million for Agriculture Department computers. These computers are made by human beings and sold by computer sales people. Apple, IBM and Microsoft will all get a slice of that pie and create high paying jobs.

Same with $650 million for TV converter boxes. There is a TV converter manufacturer out there right? More jobs.

$15 billion for college grants. This employees professors and janitors at us colleges all across this land. Not to mention it's an investment in the country's future by having higher skilled workers.

$1 billion to deal with Census problems. The Census is part of the constitution...no really it is...go ahead and read the amendments. We are required by law to count every American every year. I was hired back in 1990 to do this. It is a temporary creation of jobs specifically to count people. it's only for a few months but it creates jobs.

$870 million to combat the flu. It's not the flu it's pandemic flu. It may not happen now or in 20 years, but we might as well stockpile now to create jobs now instead of waiting until good times to create jobs no one wants.

$88 million to provide a new building for the Public Health Service. I see construction jobs. and last time I checked not a lot of people are building houses these days.

So tell me where's the pork?

What pork, where?? wrote on February 02, 2009 05:18 PM: This stimulus package is like throwing bird seed out on the ground. Before the intended recipients can get it, the varmits have it scarfed up.
Is that the same as having a tax cheat, Geithner, as head of our Treasury Dept? And appointed by whom? Oh, that's also our new prez - that depicts about the same level of integrity as the varmits.

Daniel wrote on February 02, 2009 04:52 PM: Patrick i will bet you 1 million dollars that this stimulus package will not make 3-4 million jobs as Akbar Hussein Obama and your dems
says it will. As for the infrastructure work, the companies that get these jobs already have their workers and once it starts to get nice outside to work, Those workers will be back at work and off of work. Guess what Patrick that means their will be some people off of unemployment. Now remember every year during winter many jobs are stopped and workers collect unemployment until the weather turns around and then they go back to work and unemployment drops. This happens every year. Now when U.S. companies start employing non U.S. Residence and the dems allowed this visa program to happen for cheaper labor then who remains unemployed thanks to the dems visa laws. Yes Patrick, AMERICANS.

Harry, Nancy, obama and dems are all Baby GENOCIDE Killers for allowing to pay for all abortions.

Charlie Williams wrote on February 02, 2009 04:14 PM: Some of these may be worthwhile, most aren't. EVERYONE on welfare should have mandatory drug tests, prior to getting their checks and should be watched to assure that it is THEIR urine sample.
NO illegals should get welfare or any government money for any reason, other than placing them on a bus, plane, boat, etc. which will not be unlocked untill they reach the border inside their country!!!!

patrick wrote on February 02, 2009 03:51 PM: Rob:

Yes I am passionate. Its one of my many faults.

And, you're wrong Rob, savings is NOT the only way to invest, and during times of crisis savings is detrimental to economic progress.

Think of it this way Rob; you're a bank, and times are tough. People are unemployed, losing their homes, and not spending. Now a businessman comes to you and proposes that you lend him some of that money that's been sitting in your vault gathering dust which more and more people have been putting there.

He tells you that he's got a great idea; he's going to build cheap houses, or open a mortgage business, or a mine, or retail store, or a restaurant; what you are you going to tell him Rob?

Now, imagine instead, if your an unemployed casino worker who's received his last unemployment check about a month ago and can no longer afford to heat his house, feed his kids, or take his wife out for a meal.

The state, tells him, "hey you, we're going to extend your unemployment benefits for another six months", what will he do with that money Rob?

Alternatively, this same former casino worker goes to the unemployment office looking for work and finds that the state contracting office is building a new freeway in town and he, as he always does, applies and actually gets the job. He starts receiving his weekly checks; what does he do with the money?

This is what the Democrats are proposing and it makes good sense TODAY, which is not to say it always makes sense. There are times when it will not work, but it will work now and reducing taxes will not.
