SHERMAN FREDERICK: This is the plan?

Give up capitalism for Lent?

For sheer boldness, you gotta love those deep-breathing Beltway Democrats who suggest America ought to alter her traditional economic principles to overcome the global recession.

They're convinced capitalism is so last century. As for self-interest, free trade and dreams of individual wealth? So much misguided "let-them-eat-cake" thinking. Wealth-sharing is the new ticket. It is, as Oscar winner Sean Penn might say, "elegant." And all the rage in Europe.

  • But you'll excuse me if I don't obediently take my place at this kooky séance table.

First, I don't think the spirit of FDR is worth conjuring, other than to learn how to prolong a recession.

Second, President Bam's guiding assertion is absurd. To fix the woes "inherited" from President Bush, we must now engage in a wilder form of federal deficit spending? It's a rationalization akin to an alcoholic celebrating the first day of a sober life at the Glenfiddich distillery.

And third, how is a plan for stealing from the more productive in society to "help" the less productive good for anybody in the American hive? And why isn't it called by its correct name if it's to be part of the public discourse? I guess the same way we allow a $787 billion spending bill to be called a "stimulus and recovery" bill.

Democrats, of course, will say socialism is not at all what they intend. They will say they strive only to provide "equal opportunity" for all. Yet, if recent American history has taught us anything, it is that Democratic handout programs turn into spirit-crushing disasters in which the participants, instead of quickly finding self-reliance, find permanent hopelessness.

Look, all good Americans believe in giving everyone a fair shot. Social conservatives, however, really believe in creating fair opportunities, not outcomes. It's not about giving people somebody else's fish. It's about teaching, sharing and celebrating the joy of fishing, not to mention equal access to the good fishing holes.

No one will starve. But some will do it better. That's American.

What's now happening in Washington, if I may borrow a phrase from Monty Python, is something completely different.

Spend a little time looking at Obama's Web site, which "explains" his new $3.55 trillion annual budget proposal. You can find it at www.whitehouse.gov/. Look for the code words. It should make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

The president says we must "break from the troubled past ... and chart a new path." We are "inheriting the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression -- which will force us to increase deficit spending temporarily as we try to jump-start economic growth."

To do this, America must eat the rich to feed the poor. We have to do this, the president says, because of the "legacy of fiscal irresponsibility left to us."

Do you get it? Understand how it's somebody else's deficit? And to fix it, we have to triple down on the deficit. You know, fight fire with fire. Save cancerous capitalism by radiating it with socialism. If he were truly transparent, his budget proposal would end like this: "Now, c'mon, honey. Don't be scared ... come closer and feel the warm embrace from Mother State."

Sorry. I'm not in the mood for a group hug today.

Asking Americans to give up capitalism temporarily for a form of socialism is like ordering a Catholic to give up Christianity for Lent.

The word "insane" doesn't quite capture the self-destructive nature of the request.

Kickboxermomma wrote on March 04, 2009 06:26 AM: I admit to Bush Bashing but I was not a columnist who insisted on "respecting the office of the presidency"(i.e. giving Bush cover for war crimes and failed fiscal and administrative policies).

Seems a little hypocritical Snarky Sherman to call the President- President Bam. Sherm face it the tired, failed, retread ideas of the Republican party are going nowhere. President Bam's ratings are near 70% the Repubs are in the tank.

Interestingly Sherm bashes President BAM's policies and fails to point out what they do positively. For example those persons paying COBRA through the stimulus package can receive 65% discount of their COBRA payment. This massive assistance provides necessary insurance coverage to out of work or laid off employees. Continuance of COBRA payment also provides protection for the continued coverage of pre-existing conditions when that out of work person has a job and is able to once again get insurance coverage.

People like Snarky Shermie toss around a term like socialism as though it were a four letter word or something to be feared. They use their bully platform to misinform. Sherman astute person that he is realizes that Obama's proposals are not socialism. He just doesn't like that Obama is attempting to rein in the abuses of the economic free wheeling, unregulated free-fall market practices of the past. The American public is not buying into Shern's lies .

BTW, TEV Senator John McCain was never born in the United States. He was born in the Panama Canal Zone. Without a question MCCain was a United States Citizen however, he was not a native born United States citizen as required by the Constitution. The Birth Certificate issue was laid to rest regarding Obama long ago. Too bad Senator Shelby masks his racism through ignorance.

Jeff wrote on March 02, 2009 01:57 PM: Let me get this straight, when the Republicans do it, it is called "economic stimulus." When the Democrats do it, it is called "socialism."

I never got a "stimulus check" under President Bush's regime because of my income level. Those making less than me got checks, depending on their income levels. Is that not the very definition of "redistribution of wealth"?

And it worked so well, didn't it? The economy is now so much better off for cutting billions of dollars' worth of "stimulus checks."

It was a bad idea then, and it is a bad idea now. But don't pin the blame entirely on one party. President Bush and plenty of Republicans supported the plan way back when.

By the way, Mr. Inconsistency, one of your recent themes has been respect for the Presidency, even if you do not respect the person holding the office. And then you refer to the President of the United States in your column as "President Bam"? You are certainly free to call him anything you like, but don't chastize those who boo his predecessor or call him unflattering names.

Ah, but that would make you a fair and sensible person. Judging from your columns, that's probably way too much to ask.

ame wrote on March 02, 2009 06:27 AM: Finally, some truth on the entire Obama dissembling equivocation. zerO is a dedicated socialist and he has enough left Dems and at least three left Republicans to get it done. Obambi is out to destroy capitalism - he said so in the campaign - and Americans were fools to elect him and his corrupt cronies. This economic crisis is not the fault of capitalism, but of government intervention by implementing socialist social engineering policies - a la Carter and Clinton. Socialism got us into this mess and Obama is doing everything he can to increase his own power and the power of the state. Hello, voters!! We are the USA, not Europe. If people want Europe, move there and take Obama with you. 2010 and 2012 better throw the leftist out.

For that matter, how many CEOs are out there sucking the lifeblood out of the U.S. economy and Treasury? For the sins of this very small segment of the U.S. population, liberals justify whacking all hard working, mortgage paying, tuition paying, charity giving taxpayers with a debt and tax increase that are so disproportional with the fundamental breakdowns that initially contributed to the business and credit breakdowns that we are now facing. This is evidenced by the market's almost instantaneous reaction to every spending and income re-distribution scheme crafted by the intellectual and elegant elte in D.C.

The Obama supporters who embrace the pain and suffering that poorly managed banks, undisciplined corporate governance, trickle-down economics, and the so-called "Bush Deficit" have used these sound bytes as an opportunity to fundamentally change the social fabric of this country. We get it! You won! But please tell us how any of the legislation and spending passed by the new administration and Democratic Congress will solve the economic challenges we're facing?

Instead listening to Rush or Sherm or your favorite talking head or economist whose "religion" is either free market, socialist, or somewhere in between read the real news and read it regularly. The whole world economy and banking system is on the edge of a cliff and whether it goes over or not remains to be seen. We need less economic "religion" and more rational solutions instead of the let'em fail suicidal mentality. The Enforcer in his 5:24pm post may be right. We had better hope he's wrong but there's a very good chance he's not.
