LETTERS: What exactly are the protesters protesting?

To the editor:

After watching the coverage of the protests that were held in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, I was both proud to be an American and confused by the comments made by some of the protesters.

  • Many said they had gone to D.C. from around the country to "take their freedoms back" from the government and the Obama administration. A curious thing to say, considering that these folks were able to travel unimpeded through various states to get to their destination.

They were able to assemble peacefully and voice their opposition to government policies without fear of persecution or prosecution.

They carried signs, some insulting and others downright crude (depictions of Mr. Obama as Hitler or the Joker) without being hauled off to jail or attacked on the street by "jack-booted thugs."

Others, given occurrences at recent town hall gatherings, probably carried firearms without worry.

Some carried signs saying that Mr. Obama is converting the United States into a fascist nation. Really?

I wonder if any of these fine Americans can tell me precisely which "freedoms" they lost and need to "take back."

    Alarm bells

    To the editor:

The U.S, Department of Education's distribution of a lesson plan for all public schools to use in conjunction with President Obama's online back-to-school talk was more than a "ham-handed" operation of little or no consequence, as you assert ("President Obama and education," Sept. 13 editorial).

Indeed, it was consistent with the Obama administration's current use of federal stimulus money to blackmail states into adopting national education standards and tests currently under construction by a coalition of academics and Washington lobbyists. According to regulations published this summer in the Federal Register, states must adopt these standards and aligned tests (amounting to a national curriculum), or else forfeit billions of dollars of federal aid.

Once all these tools of nationalization are in place, federal lesson plans will be commonplace.

The set that accompanied the president's seemingly innocuous speech was a precursor, which should be setting off alarm bells.

you have got to be kidding, you really do not know why people were protesting!!
You are using semantics to oppose their
    opposition against an avowed socialist,,
Do you think people should wait until the damage is done??? Get real, people are terminating the embrio before it is born,,, This administration, comprised of socialists, tax cheats ,criminals, (one just purged, thank GOD), are dangerous to our way of life,,, Americans know all about Mao, Stalin, Hitler and their ilk and are not going to let this country head in that direction,,,HOW ABOUT YOU???

SaraKLeon wrote on September 23, 2009 08:35 AM: JB – Obviously they were ok with what was being done. If you were not, did you protest? Do you think these people are (insert any negative word) because they claim to be Republicans? Do you think that the Democrats are (insert any positive word) only because they are Democrats/Liberals? Better questions; where are all of the Anti-War protesters? Where is the running total death count posted in the MSM? What is the rush to pass something that is a 1000 pgs long, per committee bill, if we will not see the benefits until 2013? Why not let the American people vote on this issue? And, no, maybe their outrage is not misdirected. To me, Obama is Bush Lite. If all of these stimulus packages, both I & II, were needed immediately, where is the money? What is it NOT being spent on?

Both sides are just as guilty of protesting only what they want to. People saying that Obama is the new Hitler, is no different than when people said that Bush was the new Hitler. The approach from both sides shows me that they are all ridiculous, in their own little worlds and would not listen to anything I said or you said to disagree with them. It boils down to the fact that people will believe only what they believe, that includes you and I. Sometimes people need to wake up! I can no longer tolerate people who blindly follow any party or politician. If you cannot think for yourself, then stay home, tune out and shut up! Let those who do have critical thinking and reasoning skills make your decisions for you.

The most basic right I have lost is my right to my property and the fruits of my labors. The government, the prior and present administration are infringing in the most important right we have. For without the right to our own personal property(ie. my wages I earn or the fruits of my labors)are slowly being taken away. Starting 70 yrs ago with income taxes, which was never to exceed 1% of anyone's income, Social Security that was going to be kept in trust for you when you retire(until Truman and LBJ got their hands on it),there has been constant march to take away the money you and I earn through our work and put it into government programs.Since when do you think its a good deal to take money away from some and give it to someone else that had done nothing to earn it? As a famous thinker of our country said,"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." Thomas Jefferson
Always remember, if the government is big enough to give you everything you want, it is also big enough to take everything away.

Constant protests and lots of bad liberal behaivor. Criminal behaivor by the liberal protesters at the RNC because it is their right to speak. Let all the newly organized freedom marchers speak their minds you bunch of haters. I am a cop and I can not imagine the party the criminals will be having if these laws are passed for we will all be in jail for speaking the Constitional truth. Idiots and criminals and now socialist Czars. Get me back the dumbest president to ever walk the earth and we will all be better off than with Obama.

Did you miss the bail outs, stimulus package, cash for clunkers, etc? Did you miss a government that is so arrogant that if one disagrees they are assailed a racist? How about all that money going to ACORN...already convicted of several crimes and more on the way? Did you miss an Administration that has "czars" that are totally out of the mainstream...self avowed communist, drinking water with sterilizing agents added, lawyers for animals, etc.? Did you miss a President that apologizes to countries that would be speaking a different language but for the USA? Did you miss POTUS bowing to the sovereign of another nation? And I'm pretty sure you missed the Blair Holt Firearm Licensing and Record of Sales Act of 2009. Perhaps you might want to read the Constitution and some of the writings of our Founders and see how far our freedom have already been eroded. All it takes for tyranny to prevail is for a lot of good people to do nothing.

This Chef Holland of the Chicago 'Obama Swiftboaters' takes a little facts, mixes it with some fiction and stirs in a little lewd innuendo for effect.

Why would this paper print a letter from a Winger Nut Job from out of town over the hometown ones?

Why would this paper print anything about public education from a Far Right Libertarian Lobbying group who helped create the disastrous "No Child Left Behind Act"?

    Wake Up Conservatives!
Wingers think their base is gullible and better off Fearful and DELUSIONAL!

It will only take you a few minutes and a Library card to figure out the connection between the "R.J." and the 'closet supremacists' doing business as The "Heartland" Institute!

TO Stoke Fear, Promote Misconceptions and Embrace Hypocrisy!
That's seems to be the mission of this paper's Editorial Board.

Where Have The Real Conservatives Gone?

Has the whole party been hijacked by the Far Right?

How many local citizen letters were disregarded for this hack job?

Oh, whats the use? It's like trying to reason with a doorknob.

Blackvegas wrote on September 15, 2009 09:38 PM: Why call them Delusionals??????

I just read where a Winger here is decrying the Obama administration for causing harm to "people who can barely afford to buy tires for their cars", and then HE accuses Democrats of being "deceitful hypocrites".

I, uh....well, uh...... Oh forget it!
It would be pointless to debate you tommy!

    All I can say is:
Go get your gun, tommy! Somebody is at your door trying to give you free Dental Care!

"They carried signs, some insulting and others downright crude (depictions of Mr. Obama as Hitler or the Joker)".

Is much of this behavior the expression of sublimated racism by folks who simply cannot abide the fact that a black man is President?

    Tommy is a liar.
    Tommy is a liar.

His very first post referenced the entire category of "tires." The entire category of tires.

After we then proved the idiocy of Tommy, he backpedaled and narrowed his statement to "Chinese tires" but only, only, only after he was corrected by your's truly.

Just review the history below and witness the desperate bobbing and weaving of yet another con who cannot lead, but can only mislead.

Tommy. Can you hear me? Tommy? Tommy?

tommy wrote on September 15, 2009 08:57 PM: Man, you are a complete idiot. I've been saying tire prices are going up over a China trade war all day long, and now you come along at 7:18PM and say the SAME EXACT thing I said, but you can't comprehend that???

Can your brain comprehend what this means: "By the way...tires will cost 30% more in a few months due to our trade war with China. Good job, Obama."

How about this: "It's going to end up costing the consumer," said Earl Buono, co-owner of Stoney Hollow Tire, an independent tire distributorship based in Martins Ferry, Ohio. "Low-end tires made in China sell for about $50 to $60 in U.S. stores and prices will rise to $85 to $90, he said."

    Does your brain register yet?

You better check what your union is putting in that coffee you're drinking.
