Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hopes that if he repeats a campaign slogan enough, it will become true.
"I'm independent, just like Nevada," the Democrat said Monday after making his campaign official by filing his candidacy with the secretary of state. "The people of Nevada know me. I'm not going to change who I am. I'm the same person today that I used to be."
Independent like Nevada. He won election to the Senate in 1986 under that banner, and, in the spirit of all things green, recycled it in 2004, when he faced token opposition in rolling to a fourth term. Today, however, many voters aren't buying.
There's no political independence in standing next to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at every photo opportunity, nor in championing the far-left agenda of President Barack Obama. There's no political independence in buying the votes of colleagues with Nevadans' tax dollars, nor in carrying water for the unions that are bankrupting corporations, states and local governments.
The people of Nevada do indeed know Sen. Reid, and he is not the same person he used to be. He is a national figure who works on a national stage. His home is a Ritz-Carlton condo in the nation's capital, not his native Searchlight.
According to a survey conducted for the Review-Journal last month by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, 51 percent of the state's voters have an unfavorable opinion of Sen. Reid, a dreadful figure he hasn't reversed despite spending millions of dollars on ads that tout his Nevada roots and his power in Washington.
But instead of using that power to promote policies that nurture economic growth, Sen. Reid has pushed economy-crushing, debt-building, government-growing, recession-stretching boondoggles that will burden future generations with higher costs, higher taxes and fewer opportunities.
Make no mistake, in the less than eight months before Election Day, Sen. Reid will not be sprinting to the center and chatting with common Nevadans struggling to make ends meet amid 13 percent unemployment.
No, he'll try to resurrect punishing medical insurance regulations that will put America on a path to a nationalized, single-payer health care system, and he'll be rounding up votes for the president's cap-and-trade carbon tax. Making health care and energy more expensive for the middle class.
Independent like Nevada? Good luck, Sen. Reid. You'll need it.

We are all victims of the Neo-cons lying us into war, killing and maiming tens of thousands of Americans and destroying our reputation around the world.
What would make people overlook this? RACISM!
We are all victims of the Neo-con's past and current deregulation policies allowing Wall Street to fleece our national treasure, force Americans out of their homes and jobs with irresponsible transactions that nearly destroyed our country.
What would make us overlook that? RACISM!
We are all victims of the right-wing lies and propaganda like Death Panels, Non American President, government takeover of health care, Socialists in government, to name a few, with tens of Americans dying and citizens slandering each other daily. What would make Americans overlook this? RACISM!
All Nevada Republicans are victims when Low Life Lowden throws out all votes because she doesn't like the winner. What would make Nevadans over look that? IGNORANT RACISM!
What would make Nevadans overlook all of the crippling tragedies perpetrated by Right Wing-Nuts on this country and why in the hell would any sane person vote these nation killing criminals back into power? IGNORANCE!
As a non black Republican, I am told daily at work about how embarrassing it is to have a non-white, non-American President and that we should do all we can to attack him and his supporters!
So to you who always cry Socialism,
I know now it is OK destroy our country and state, as long as we are white!
You would have to be dumb or racist to vote for wing-nuts after all the damage they've caused this country and her citizens!
How ironic for these closet racist who willy nilly use the word Socialism to decry the use of the word racism?
Well, if the shoe fits....
hey black vegas, you're the racist.
quit using the victim routine, it's because i'm black isn't it? it's pathetic. how about growing a set?
BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO, RJ, GREAT EDITORIAL. I THINK STINKY PINKY HAS A TRICK UP HIS SLEEVE CALLED LEGALIZING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BEFORE THE ELECTION
AS HIS WINNING STRATEGY. IF NOT, HE'S EVEN DUMBER THAN I THOUGHT. WHAT AM I SAYING??? OF COURSE HE IS!!!
THE ONLY GOOD NEWS IS HE'S SPENDING ALL THOSE ADVERTISING DOLLARS IN NEVADA.
LOL!
TO BLACK VEGAS: BITE ME.
Yup. You're right. Need to have comments up there for sure just to make sure what's up.
We love you Harry. Thanks for the 1000 job Chinese wind company. Maybe that will make up for the killed clean coal power plant, Yucca Mt., Obama dising Vegas twice costing 1000's of jobs and 100's of millions of convention dollars, the lost 10's of millions of HUD money for foreclosure help, the Meg Lav project, etc. You're a real help to the state. Enjoy your retirement.
C'mon Sherm,
Why is the story on Sen. Reid's wife and daughters accident the only story I have ever seen on this rag without a comment section?
I guess it would really show the hate in the hearts of many Nevadans whose racists views are inspired by your editorials.
Remember the flippant remarks by Low Life Lowden about the attempted assassination attempts on Nevada's now highest ranking politician in history?
C'mon Sherm, let the racists make their comments. Show the world who your newspaper inspires.
Give 'em hell Harry!
Your great efforts for this State and Country will NOT go unnoticed.
No matter how much your record is distorted or just plain ignored, such as the thousands of jobs at C.C or the recent 1000 jobs developed yesterday and ignored by this paper, we do appreciate you.
As a lifelong Republican, I can't stand the misinformation campaigned sponsored by the far right and lapped up by the closet racists.
So, for the first time in my life I will vote for you, a Democrat for Senator should you win your primary.
The defining moment was today after hearing vile and disgusting racist language at work that made me sick.
(such as "the only thing worse than a N. is a N. lover" and seeing the Right Wing press ignore the 1000 "Green" jobs you have acquired for this state this week.
I promise you though, should you win re-election, I will press you vigorously about this invasion of our country by Mexico and the wanton genocide you call abortion!

This editorial is filled with only lies and mis-characterizations.
This would be a cruel joke if it wasn't for the mother-load of right wing closet racists inhabiting this state.
After reading the right wing strategy papers leaked to the media recently, how could any one come to any other conclusion than, as the Republicans state in their new platform, America is filled with ignorant racists waiting to be exploited.
Creating fear in the populace by claiming Senator Reid, Speaker Pelosi and President Obama's main goal is to destroy America scares the hell out of ignorant people and racists, even those who knows it's not true.
Only Racism could make voters in this state forget how it was the Republicans whose policies of deregulation and war crimes have nearly destroyed this country.
As President Obama was sworn in, this country was on the verge of imploding.
Senators Reid's Republican opponents have:
cost us millions of jobs,
destroyed our reputation in the world,
needlessly cost us thousands of Americans lives,
forced millions of Americans out of their homes
and bankrupted our national treasure.
After all the disasters Republicans have caused the American people, for a major newspaper to claim that "Sen. Reid has pushed economy-crushing, debt-building, government-growing, recession-stretching boondoggles that will burden future generations with higher costs, higher taxes and fewer opportunities." would be a sick joke if it wasn't for the many dumb racists in this State that would believe these outrages and false claims.
I do admit though, that not all the people who believe this false propaganda are racists, some are just plain ignorant!
"jcm wrote on March 11, 2010 07:28 PM: coloredvegas,
you sound like someone who wants a free
ride that i pay for."
To Jack,
Unfortunately it's only going to get worse.
Racists are using the code words of "Real Patriots" in public and far worse language in "private" company.
It seems as if the election of an African-American President has given license to the extreme.
To me it just portends the racism that has been simmering under the surface for years.
Like the oil that rises on our roads when it rains!
