Element hotel breaks ground in Summerlin

The master-planned community of Summerlin will soon have its first non-gaming extended-stay hotel, Element, which broke ground Sept. 24.

Located in The Gardens Village near Town Center Drive at Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway, Element will feature 123 rooms, a fitness center, 800 square feet of meeting space, integrated technology center and library, café and a lobby/lounge area.

  • Element is a project of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., LaPour Partners Inc. and Westin Hotels & Resorts.

    Rooms at Element are planned to feature modular furniture, swiveling flat-screen televisions, desks with open shelving, custom-designed closets and oversized spa showers. In addition, each room will offer a complete kitchen with Energy Star-certified appliances and all the utensils needed to prepare a gourmet meal.

    "Seventeen years after development commenced in Summerlin, we're still introducing 'firsts' to the community," said Kevin Orrock, top division president for The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., developer of Summerlin.

    "A non-gaming, extended-stay hotel is a great addition to Summerlin's existing list of amenities," Orrock said.

    Though Element will serve the entire Las Vegas Valley, it is planned to supplement accommodations for the friends and family of patients being treated at the nearby Nevada Cancer Institute.

    The state's only comprehensive cancer center, Nevada Cancer Institute treats hundreds of patients, many of them from outside Las Vegas.

    "Surely the friends and family of patients at Nevada Cancer Institute will benefit from the location, service and design of Element," Orrock said.

    Summerlin is home to two other hotels - JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort, Spa & Golf, located in The Canyons Village, and Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa, located in Summerlin Centre. Combined, the hotels offer more than 1,500 rooms.

    "Summerlin is a great place for visitors wanting to experience the best lifestyle in Las Vegas," Orrock said. "The community's growing list of hotels provides first-class lodging in a thoughtfully planned community - just minutes from the famous Las Vegas Strip and minutes from the scenic Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area."

    Summerlin began to take shape in 1990 when there was virtually no commerical or residential development west of Durango Drive.

    A 22,500-acre master-planned community located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin was a success from day one. The master-planned community's popularity helped ignite the building boom that transformed the valley into a major metropolitan area that now accommodates a permanent resident population in excess of 2 million.

    Summerlin is home to more than 95,000 residents and it remains a work in progress. With about 7,500 acres still to develop, including its urban core village of Summerlin Centre, Summerlin will continue to grow for years to come.

    Summerlin is home to more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 22 public and private schools and more than 100 actively selling floor plans.

    Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the low $200,000s to more than $2 million.

    Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s. Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the low $1,000s.
