Summerlin resident sheds weight, commits entire family to fitness

Alisa Millich, a Summerlin resident since 1997 and busy mother of three, was a successful participant of a community-wide fitness initiative last year when she lost 25 pounds and two dress sizes. Today, Millich remains committed to a healthier lifestyle for her entire family, thanks to the motivation and success she achieved last year.

"While I haven't kept off all 25 pounds, I am still down two dress sizes," said Millich, who credits a healthier lifestyle with the fitness program created last year by The Summerlin Council and immediate access to an array of trails and other recreational amenities. "Last year, I turned over a new leaf and I am proud to say that I am continuing to help my whole family live better," she said. "In addition to eating a more healthy diet, we are watching less television and exercising more often."

  • Millich considers the community's extensive trail system her own personal "workout room," walking several miles on the trails each week. "There's really no excuse not to get out and move around," Millich said. "The trail beckons to me and my family almost every day and it's right in my backyard."

Millich and her family are not alone in their enjoyment of Summerlin's trail system.

According to results from the community's 2007 annual survey, more than 70 percent of respondents use the trail at least once every few weeks. And in annual surveys conducted over the past four years, trails have consistently ranked as the favorite outdoor amenity among residents -- well ahead of parks, golf courses, tennis courts and other recreational facilities.

The Summerlin trail system currently encompasses more than 150 miles of street-side, village, bicycle and regional and natural trails. Each kind of trail is designed to accommodate a specific use and cater to a variety of outdoor and recreational enthusiasts. Eventually, Summerlin will have more than 200 miles of trails throughout the community.

According to Julie Cleaver, director of design and planning for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, trail systems are the outdoor amenity of choice for most Americans. "Several years ago, golf courses ranked as the preferred amenity within master-planned communities," she said. "But today, thanks to a heightened focus on health and fitness, trails are the preferred amenity because they resonate with people of all ages and interests. Trails can be enjoyed equally by runners, cyclists, walkers and even casual strollers. The community's extensive trail system will continue to grow with the community."

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with about 9,000 acres still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan, including the community's urban core of Summerlin Centre.

The community is currently home to more than 95,000 residents. Amenities include more than 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 22 public and private schools and more than 100 actively selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the upper $200,000s to more than $2 million. Custom home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s. Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
