MEET THE BIG FELLA: D.R. Horton hosts SuperBuy party

William "The Refrigerator" Perry to mingle with home shoppers Jan. 26

D.R. Horton, one of the nation's largest new home builders, is holding a football-themed SuperBuy Saturday sales event Jan. 26 at its Riverwalk Estates neighborhood in the northern valley. Hosting the event is William "The Refrigerator" Perry, the former Chicago Bears defensive lineman known for his girth and friendly smile.

Named SuperBuy Saturday by the D.R. Horton sales team, what began as a simple promotion evolved into a football-themed extravaganza, sales manager Ed Smith said. Following price reductions and the release of 500 completed homes, SuperBuy week culminates Jan. 26 -- eight days before the Super Bowl -- in a home-shoppers' party at Riverwalk Estates, a D.R. Horton neighborhood, Smith said.

  • The SuperBuy Saturday party runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Perry signing autographs and posing for pictures from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

"Since our rollout of 500 completed homes at 'new market' prices, our sales pace has been tremendous," Smith said. "SuperBuy Saturday is an opportunity for home shoppers to negotiate the valley's best deal, and celebrate their purchase in SuperBuy fashion."

Those purchasing homes will receive a free refrigerator from the builder, Smith said.

In addition, there will be prizes for pass-and-kick contests, tailgate food, and a free raffle for flat-screen televisions, Wii video consoles, Fat Head posters and D.R. Horton game jerseys, Smith said. Admission is free.

Perry played in the NFL from 1985 through 1994, the first seven seasons with Chicago and two with the Philadelphia Eagles. Tipping the scales at more than 350 pounds as a pro, Perry arrived in Chicago with the catchy nickname that had been given to him by a teammate at Clemson University who noticed that the affable Perry was built like a refrigerator.

Perry played defensive end, but Bears Coach Mike Ditka thrilled fans by letting "The Fridge," as he was often called, carry the ball as a fullback in short-yardage situations on occasion. Perry scored a touchdown on a 1-yard plunge in Super Bowl XX as Chicago routed New England 46-10 in New Orleans. Now 45 years old, Perry is believed to own the largest Super Bowl ring ever presented by the league (size 25).

Home shoppers are encouraged to visit any of D.R. Horton's 40 neighborhoods across the valley during SuperBuy week, which runs through Jan. 26, to register for the SuperBuy raffle.

"Following last week's announcement of valleywide price reductions, our phones have lit up," concierge Brian Frabbiele said. "People want quick move-in homes, and we have 500 of them. SuperBuy Saturday is a promotion and a party. The Realtor community loves it."

For more than 10 years, D.R. Horton has been a leading builder of single-story homes in the Las Vegas Valley. Twenty-two of the builder's communities showcase only single-story homes, ranging from 1,000 to more than 5,000 square feet.

Smith said ranch-style floor plans featuring dual master bedrooms are popular.

"More and more families find themselves housing multiple family generations," Smith said.

"Our 2350 and 2550 dual master floor plans have been a huge hit with families of grown children or those who have invited their parents to move in."

D.R. Horton recently lowered the price of the 2350 floor plan to below $140 per square foot in some valley locations, Smith said.

Over the past seven years, D.R. Horton has unveiled townhome floor plans commonly called triplexes. Initially offered by the company at its San Diego communities, triplexes are now available in the Las Vegas Valley.

Featuring attached garages and amenity-rich communities featuring swimming pools, triplex floor plans are typically offered in D.R. Horton's Ranch neighborhoods, Smith said.

The Horton Ranch subdivisions offer multiple model complexes at a wide range of prices, beginning in the mid-$100,000s, he said.

To visit D.R. Horton's SuperBuy Saturday party at Riverwalk Estates at 4613 Sea Dream Ave., take Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway, to Decatur Boulevard and exit south. Turn left on Tropical Parkway and follow signs to the party.
