D.R. Horton readies for SuperBuy

As the town of Glendale, Ariz., prepares for the Super Bowl frenzy next week, D.R. Horton is kicking off festivities today in Las Vegas with SuperBuy Saturday.

"This event is a promotion and a party all wrapped into one," sales manager Bill Vincent said.

  • "We have drastically reduced prices on 500 homes that are immediately available in our 40 communities. Each community has homes that are clearly the valley's best values," Vincent said.

The party begins at noon at Riverwalk Ranch Estates, located at North Decatur Boulevard and Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway.

The event will include a free lunch, Vincent said. Visitors may register in a free raffle for a chance to win flat-screen TVs, Wii products and I-pods. For those who wish to test their football talents, there will be a skills challenge, trivia contest and a "hard-hitter" hammering contest sponsored by D.R. Horton's construction superintendents.

Hosting the party is pro football legend William "The Refrigerator" Perry, who will be available for autographs, pictures and a glimpse at his Super Bowl ring, which is a whopping size 25.

Perry played in the NFL from 1985 through 1994, the first seven seasons with the Chicago Bears and two with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"The Fridge" will sign autographs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and will announce the raffle winners live on a KKLZ-96.3 FM radio broadcast at 4 p.m., Vincent said.

"You just can't include 'The Fridge' at your party without including a fridge in your promotion," D.R. Horton Marketing Director Jeff Ward said. "Every home purchaser today will receive a free 20.5-cubic-inch refrigerator with their new home. If this goes well, perhaps we'll have 'Cadillac' Williams (a running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; real name: Carnell) next year."

"The Refrigerator" arrived in Chicago in 1985 with the nickname that had been hung on him by a Clemson University teammate who noticed that the South Carolina native was built like a refrigerator.

Perry's position was defensive end, but Bears Coach Mike Ditka occasionally let "The Fridge" carry the ball as a fullback in short-yardage situations. Perry weighed more than 350 pounds when he played in the NFL.
