KB Homes builds Energy Star residences in valley

KB Home builds new homes in Las Vegas to strict Energy Star guidelines, according to Jim Widner, regional president of KB Home.

Energy costs associated with heating and cooling a home can account for up to half of an average household's utility bills, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.

The Las Vegas division was recognized by the EPA with a 2009 Energy Star Leadership in Housing Award for its contributions to energy efficient construction and environmental protection in building new homes in the Las Vegas Valley.

"Las Vegas-area homebuyers want quality homes that are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and affordable -- both at the time of purchase and over the lifetime of operating the home," Widner said.

"Homes built to Energy Star guidelines drive down buyers' energy costs, which is bound to be a welcome relief as we head into summer."

In order to be designated as an Energy Star-qualified home, a third party must verify it meets a set of strict EPA requirements.

KB homes built to Energy Star guidelines in Las Vegas include tight duct work and effective insulation that is inspected to meet an EPA-approved thermal bypass checklist, advanced technology windows with low-e glass, Energy Star qualified appliances and 13 SEER central air conditioning units. Energy Star products use less energy which reduces consumption of fossil fuels and resulting air pollution.

KB Home offers the My Home My Earth program, which includes a range of environmentally friendly options, in its Home Studio.
