"Akeelah and the Bee" is the story of Akeelah Anderson, an elementary school student being raised by her widowed mother. Akeelah is an intelligent girl, but a fair student. She avoids acting the studious type around her friends and classmates, yet her teacher recognizes her potential and encourages her to enter the school's spelling bee. Akeelah accepts the challenge and wins the local competition, but realizes that the challenge expands greatly in the statewide bee. She studies under the guidance of Dr. Larabee, an English professor who was a spelling-bee champion as a child. Larabee is a taskmaster and initially doubts Akeelah's ability and commitment. Over time, he develops a respect for his student and helps her attain her goal of competing in the National Spelling Bee.
