Community to hold run
Tools
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and the best way to honor the youngest victims battling the deadly disease is by participating in the Candlelighters 5K and One Mile Race for our Kids with Chet Buchanan Sept. 17.
This year's event and festivities will be held at Exploration Park within Mountain's Edge, a master-planned community in southwestern Las Vegas.
The annual fundraiser, now in its 21st year, benefits the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada, which raises needed funds to support children and their families affected by cancer.
With this in mind, families, friends, businesses and co-workers are encouraged to organize, join or donate to a team or become a race or walk participant.
One group assisting Candlelighters is the Nevada chapter of the Community Associations Institute, a national membership organization for homeowners' association management companies, volunteer board members and other professional service providers and business partners.
CAI's community outreach committee is coordinating a team named CAI HOA Champions with the goal of recruiting at least 200 participants for Race for our Kids.
CAI currently has the largest team signed up with 74 members. Several CAI members have children affected by cancer or immune-system disorders and received support from Candlelighters.
"CAI members hope to give back to Candlelighters, an organization that has given so much to the community through the years," said Mary Rendina, CAI Nevada executive director. "We welcome everyone to join our team, and if they're unable to attend the event, the team also accepts donations at our website, cai-nevada.org, under the Outreach tab."
Race for our Kids also includes food and refreshments, raffle prizes, children's play area, children's silent art auction, bone marrow drive, awards ceremony, boot camp obstacle course and exhibitors, including booths from several Mountain's Edge homebuilders.
Key times are 6:30 a.m. for check-in; 7:30 a.m., opening ceremonies; 8 a.m., 5K run start; 8:15 a.m., 5K walk, and 8:30 a.m., one mile stroll start.
Costs are $20 per participant for teams with 10 or more members, $25 for individual adults, $20 seniors and $15 for children ages 3-12.
Deadline for online registration is 1 p.m. Monday. To register at the Candlelighters office, visit 8990 Spanish Ridge Ave., suite 100.
Race day registration is $40 per person between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m.
There is an additional $5 for timed runners, and childhood cancer survivors and children younger than 3 years are free. Leashed pets are welcome.
Mountain's Edge is located at 9275 S. Buffalo Drive, at the Buffalo and Blue Diamond Road intersection. Exploration Park is just south of the community's entrance.
