Mountain's Edge rolls out the welcome mat in October as host for two organizations' communitywide events.

The fifth annual Family, Fur & Fun Festival presented by the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be held Oct. 8. The American Heart Association's My Heart. My Life. Walk and Run is scheduled for Oct. 15. Both events will be at the community's Exploration Park.

"The Family, Fur & Fun Festival focuses on humane education and fun for the entire family, including companion animals," said Doug Duke, NSPCA executive director, adding well-behaved companion animals are welcome and encouraged to attend, but should be leashed and comfortable with crowds. "This event celebrates animal rescue and adoption, while highlighting the role of humane education to share messages of kindness for all animals throughout the community."

The festival features educational, interactive and service booths and activities for the whole family, including pet adoptions, animal massages, animal hero badge, making rabbit toys, naming new animals at NSPCA, raffle prizes and refreshments.

There will be $5 micro chipping from Aloha Animal Hospital, Canine Good Citizen testing, and special pet portrait pricing from Arica of Pet'ographique with proceeds benefitting NSPCA.

Drs. Jason and Jamie Sulliban of Aloha Animal Hospital will give tips on keeping pets safe during Halloween and providing proper animal care.

Winners of the Clear Channel Las Vegas "The Real House Pets of Las Vegas" contest will be announced.

There is no cost to attend, but proceeds support low-cost spay, neuter and vaccination services, shelter and adoption of animals, and educational programs. For information, visit familyfurandfun.com, call 444-3713 or email info@family furandfun.com.

Event sponsors include Law Office of Donna Stidham LLC, Mountain's Edge, Aloha Animal Hospital, Good Paws Dog Training & Nutrition Consulting, Amica Insurance, Pet'ographique, Medical Reserve Corps, NutriSource Premium Pet Food, and English Garden Florist.

A week later, more than 6,000 health-minded Las Vegas residents are expected to walk or run with family, friends, co-workers and survivors of heart disease and stroke in this year's American Heart Association My Heart. My Life. Walk and Run.

Also called the Heart Walk, it has a 5K and one-mile walking route and a timed 5K run. Other activities include a free Kids Zone, free health screenings, entertainment, food, information and activities from Mountain's Edge builders. Survivors of heart disease or stroke will receive a red cap and T-shirt.

Online registration is available before Oct. 12 for $30 at lasvegasheartwalk.org. Registration is available on event day for $40 on a first-come, first-served basis. Key race day times are: 7 a.m., registration; 7:30 a.m., breakfast; 8 a.m., opening ceremonies; 9 a.m., 5K run begins; 9:15 a.m., 5K walk begins, and 11 a.m., lunch.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers, and Nevada's No. 3 and No. 4 killers. My Heart.
