The master-planned community of Summerlin is home to outdoor recreational amenities including more than 150 miles of trails and more than 150 parks that house 24 major playgrounds, 16 tennis courts, 11 basketball courts, 11 baseball/softball fields, six soccer fields, four T-ball fields, three sand volleyball courts, three pools and an outdoor roller rink.

A variety of activities are held at these outdoor venues and coordinated by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association that oversees the community's social, recreational, cultural and educational programming. The Summerlin Council coordinates 5K runs, sports leagues and athletic competitions exclusively for residents on a year-round basis.

Summerlin is located immediately adjacent to the nearly 200,000-acre Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area that features more than 2,000 climbing routes, nearly two dozen hiking trails and a 13-mile scenic loop that attracts cycling and running enthusiasts from around the world.

"The quality and quantity of Summerlin's outdoor recreational offerings beckons residents of all ages, shapes and sizes to get outside and be active," said Kevin Orrock, president of Summerlin. "Whether you're an advanced and skilled outdoorsman or a novice beginner, Summerlin's got a trail, a park, a class or a sports league for you."

According to Orrock, ranked as Summerlin's No. 1 community amenity by residents, the Summerlin trail system connects neighborhoods to major community amenities, such as schools, parks and retail centers. Summerlin trails provide a place for residents to exercise and socialize.

"The trails are Summerlin's most used outdoor amenity because it accommodates so many uses," Orrock said. "Walkers, runners and cyclists all feel equally at home on Summerlin's trails."

The system has garnered national attention, earning The Howard Hughes Corporation the American Trails Developer Award in 2008.

A complete list of Summerlin's outdoor amenities is available online at summerlin.com.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a year-long celebration that commenced in May 2010.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with 7,500 acres still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan.

The community is currently home to nearly 100,000 residents with access to amenities including 26 public and private schools, 14 houses of worship, nine golf courses, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks and more than three dozen selling floor plans.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million.
