PLENTY AT STAKE: Rebels' final three games pivotal

Bowl hopes, coaches' fates hang in balance

Last-minute touchdowns against New Mexico and San Diego State. A thwarted 2-point conversion pass against Hawaii.

A loss in any of those games, each one dramatic and critical, and UNLV doesn't make the 2000 Las Vegas Bowl.

The Rebels haven't been back to a bowl since that season, but here they are again needing to win their final three football games, beginning with New Mexico again.

"Every game that we play is a bowl game," UNLV defensive tackle Jacob Hales said.

All three games are winnable, though the task will be tougher with quarterback Omar Clayton sidelined by a right knee injury.

Clayton will miss at least one game, Saturday's 7 p.m. kickoff against the Lobos at Sam Boyd Stadium.

The final three games could determine more than whether UNLV (3-6, 0-5 Mountain West) plays in a bowl. They could affect what staff and personnel decisions coach Mike Sanford makes.

And they could impact Sanford's future, although his job might be safe. Given the troubled economy, UNLV probably would be hard-pressed to buy out the fourth-year coach -- and changing the entire staff could cost up to $1 million. Also, Sanford can argue victories over Arizona State and Iowa State and close losses to Brigham Young and Air Force indicate overall improvement.

Recent recruiting pickups also work in his favor.

"At the end of the season, we'll sit down and see where the program's at and see if we're improving," athletic director Mike Hamrick said.

Sanford said he never thinks about his future. It's hard to blame him. He's got enough to worry about over the next three weeks.

NEW MEXICO, Saturday -- This is the most demanding game of the final stretch, especially now that Clayton won't play. The Lobos (4-6, 2-4) are 31/2-point favorites in the bowl-elimination game.

"The way things are looking across the country, 6-6 is probably going to get you in a bowl game," Lobos coach Rocky Long said.

New Mexico brings in standout tailback Rodney Ferguson, not the most desirable matchup for a UNLV defense that gives up 150 yards rushing shortly after getting off the bus.

But if the Rebels make a play or two on defense and if Mike Clausen adequately replaces Clayton at quarterback, UNLV could win. Ending a five-game skid would provide a confidence boost.

WYOMING, Nov. 13 -- Joe Glenn probably is coaching his final season at Wyoming (3-6, 1-5), a team tied for last nationally in turnover margin at minus-2.2 per game. No wonder he was giddy about Saturday's 35-10 victory over San Diego State.

"We had every reason to turn tail and throw it in, and we didn't," Glenn said. "If we protect the ball as we did against San Diego State -- no turnovers -- we can be a pretty formidable program."

But that was against the Aztecs. Against teams that don't consider 3-yard gains significant accomplishments, the Cowboys lost by 44 points to Brigham Young, 24 to New Mexico, 33 to Utah and 47 to Texas Christian.

UNLV should win, but little is certain with a program that doesn't know what four victories under a Sanford-coached team feels like, and he never has beaten Glenn.

SAN DIEGO STATE, Nov. 22 -- With 19 of 22 starters having been injured, the Aztecs follow the NFL formula of having the first- and second-teamers practice against each other rather than scout teams.

And, get this, little tackling is allowed.

"I don't know anybody in the country going through this," Aztecs coach Chuck Long said. "If there is, I'd like to see how they do it."

If UNLV doesn't win this game, even though it's on the road, there should be an immediate investigation.

So there's the setup for the Rebels. The finish tells the story, more so than the 3-1 start that offered so much promise.

"There's something to be said for remembering what kind of football team we are and what we're capable of doing," Sanford said. "One of our things was to start fast and finish strong, and the big thing for us is to finish strong now."

Coach Sanford has another year. Let him do his thing and re-evaluate progress after next season. Bottom-line is that the team HAS improved. We are two games away from possibly being bowl-elgible and I would LOVE to see the Rebels give you morons something to shove further up your rears.

It's the kind of small-minded thinking from the folks like sufferin, steeler and coach K that inhibit progress. These are the people that utltimately look stupid when they are eventually proven wrong. If you guys know so much, what the hell are you doing on here. Why aren't you out there coaching or directing the athletic department?

You guy are weak. Just move...you're in the way of progress.

Shooter wrote on November 06, 2008 02:36 PM: Who?.....Since you've seen and heard it all during the last 30 years of UNLV football, what angle are they going to try that they haven't tried already. Who? Are you going to pay their salary? UNLV can't. Come on genius, what's the answer? Maybe they should hire you since you know EVERYTHING there is to know concerning UNLV football. Who? Or maybe they should've hired you 30 years ago and then we wouldn't be in this predicament knowitall.

Stamp it and sign on the dotted line....GOD,...I mean Steelers#32 is the new President, AD and Head Coach; Sufferin' Succotach is the new Offensive and Defensive coordinator of UNLV football and in their first year they will be ranked #1 throughout the season, win the Mountain West, win the National Championship and then get invited to join the PAC-10 at season's end. All with a 100 billion dollars in donations from Steve Wynn and his competitors on the strip.

No more worries in life, all of our problems have been solved: Money is no longer the driving force behind our economy (class is not an issue), peace is eternal, hunger is defeated and the wicked have been removed from the earth.

Unfortunately,...the steelers have been sold to Donald Trump in Las Vegas and they are now called the Pinheads. Cooincidently...they never won another game in their existence.

UNLV football is, has been and always will be a sub pare program at best. I have seen and heard it all since the early 1980's. Coach after coach comes here to LV and states they will turn this program around. What a joke!!! UNLV'S AD and their president need to get a real clue and hire someone that will make a real change for the better. Don't they realize the money they could pull in for UNLV if in fact they had a winning and notable football program?

Get a clue!!!

That is all that needs to be said for now. I've repeated the same information that AJ just gave over and over and over. Only because the morons of the world, thats you commy, can't ascertain the simple info that is given to them. To have to a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed has become exceedingly old and tiring, not to mention fruitless, as you seem to be getting dumber as I type. Argue with yourself if you feel it necessary but I'm out.

Good Job AJ.

AJ part 2 wrote on November 06, 2008 11:45 AM: So now that your theory has been proven inaccurate with TCU, CSU and AF, AND BYU which you apparantly forgot to mention, here are some MORE REAL facts for you. UNLV was 2-9 against opponents in 05 who had a combined 1 win under .500. UNLV is 3-6 against their opponents this year who are a combined 2 games over .500. Nothing astronomical here, I understand that. But we have 3 more very winnable games left, so you have no validity when you say that this team isn't improved since 05. It isn't factual. Should they be more improved after 4 years? YES! But are we better now than when Robinson left? Well, we still have a chance to be bowl eligible with 3 games left. Which is the best we have been since 2003. No question that that is an improvement.

AJ wrote on November 06, 2008 11:06 AM: Being so close in so many games and losing in the final minutes is very frustrating. We have had the opportunity to win every game we have played this year except TCU and Reno. Utah was solid until the first three drives of the second half when special teams blew the game. But as usual, Suck-o-tash proves how moronic he really is. Claiming that UNLV was more competitive against CSU in 05 in comparison to know is a JOKE! Apparantly you don't watch the games, you just run your mouth. In 05 we were at home and lost by 4. In 08 we were on the road and had the lead until CSU scored with 9 seconds left. Then they recovered a botched lateral on the kickoff and returned it as time expired. Don't just look at the box score schmuck. Your the one skewing numbers, not the RJ. This is more than obvious by your accusation that a 51-3 loss against TCU is more competitive than a 44-14 loss. Niehter was competitive, but don't say a 48 point loss is more competitive than 30. And we regressed against Air Force from 06 to 08? UNLV beat a 4-8 AF team in 06 and lost by 1 point to a 7-2 AF team this year. Good One, Nice Try, but YOUR skewed statistics aren't fooling anyone. And it is interesting how you leave the BYU stats off your post. Here's another fact YOU TRIED to alter by ommission. FACT: losses in 05 and 06 against BYU - 55-14 and 52-7. BYU's record those years 17-8. Losses to BYU in 07 and 08 - 24-14 and 42-35. 07-08 record 19-3.
