It's that time of year again, and the props are out there. Will the Tennessee Titans finish unbeaten? And at the other end of the spectrum, what are the prospects for the Detroit Lions to finish winless?
At Lucky's sports books, the proposition on the Titans to win every game opened "No" minus-4,000 ("Yes" plus-2,500) two weeks ago and since has moved to "No" minus-2,800 ("Yes" plus-1,800).
As for whether the hapless Lions will go winless, Lucky's opened "No" minus-700 ("Yes" plus-500), and action has changed the current numbers to "No" minus-475 ("Yes" plus-375).
Lucky's director of sports operations Jimmy Vaccaro said prop wagers attract a wide variety of action.
"I'm finding that more tickets have been written than I thought would be the case," Vaccaro said. "We had a couple of limit wagers on the Bengals, who just won, and plenty of smaller bets that make doing it worthwhile. People enjoy these things."
Tennessee continues to impress on the field and at the betting windows. The Titans are 7-1 against the spread, failing to cover for the first time last week in a 3-point overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers. The Titans are 3-point favorites at Chicago today.
Las Vegas Sports Consultants odds director Tony Sinisi has been impressed with the Titans' accomplishments, pointing out it might not be pretty, but it is effective.
"There is nothing flashy about their approach to the game," Sinisi said. "Utilizing a journeyman quarterback, with dominant work in the trenches on both sides of the ball, emphasizes the path to winning football games starts up front."
LVSC oddsmaker Mike Seba has seen the subtle changes that accompany a team that has gone this deep into the season without a loss.
"The Titans are starting to struggle. The weight of being the last unbeaten team undoubtedly takes a toll," Seba said. "Their games are becoming tighter. With their division all but locked up, losing wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen to them."
In addition, when these situations arise on an annual basis, the focus isn't only on the team chasing 16-0 or facing 0-16 but on their opponents as well.
"You definitely have to upgrade the opposition in these games," Seba said. "They either want to be the team to knock someone off or fear being the ones who blew it against a winless team."
This is nothing new for the Lions. They are staring at their third 0-9 start in franchise history, but even more telling, should they lose today at home to Jacksonville, they will have locked up a losing record for an eighth straight season. At least in Las Vegas the Lions are not sporting a goose egg, having gone 3-5 against the spread.
To add injury to insult, Dan Orlovsky, who has played fairly well since learning the field dimensions, is out of the lineup with a sprained thumb. Daunte Culpepper, who was signed Tuesday, is expected to get the start at quarterback against the Jaguars.
The oddsmakers have dropped Detroit's rating to the tune of 11/2 points. The Lions opened most places in town as 6-point underdogs, with the consensus on game day being Jacksonville minus-7.
"If we've learned anything over the years, winless teams find a way to win at some point," Seba said. "Miami was able to dodge the bullet last year."
The irony of all this revolves around Thanksgiving Day, when something would have to give should the Titans and Lions continue on their merry way.
Detroit will host Tennessee while the turkey bastes in the oven, and a Lions victory would determine both of the previously mentioned props.
