Darger's 3-point accuracy helps UNLV soar to 4-0

Drifting around the perimeter, UNLV senior Joe Darger waited for the defense to lose sight of him. When he found an opening, Darger was looking to shoot at every opportunity.

"If I'm wide open like that, I'll knock the shots down," he said.

  • The senior forward made good on that promise Saturday night, making six 3-pointers for all of his 18 points to help carry the Rebels to a 71-58 victory over North Carolina A&T at the Thomas & Mack Center.

UNLV improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2002-03 season, and the 3-point shot was again the Rebels' weapon of choice.

Darger shot 6-for-11 from long range as UNLV launched 33 3-pointers and made 11.

"I wouldn't mind if we shoot 50 3s as long as we shoot a better percentage," said Darger, who missed the only shot he attempted inside the line.

Senior guard Wink Adams led the Rebels with 19 points. He shot 3-for-10 from 3-point range and added six rebounds and five assists.

UNLV, hosting a second-round game in the eight-team Global Sports Classic, struggled to break free from the Aggies (2-2) of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

North Carolina A&T took a 45-44 lead on Nicholas Wilson's layup with 11:56 remaining, something the crowd of 12,732 probably did not expect.

But Rene Rougeau scored the next four points on a baseline jumper and two free throws as the Rebels went on a 12-0 run.

Mareceo Rutledge, a senior reserve guard, added five points during the run and sophomore Tre'Von Willis' 3-pointer put UNLV ahead 56-45 with 9:14 left.

"I thought Rutledge was a big key in the game," Rebels coach Lon Kruger said.

In the first half, Adams had 13 points and Darger nine as UNLV held a 33-29 edge. Adams and Darger combined for 22 of the team's first 25 points.

Darger's 3-pointer with 5:02 remaining put the Rebels ahead 62-51.

"Joe is shooting the ball with great confidence, and we know he's going to do that," Kruger said. "It was good to see Wink and Joe kind of take over."

Kruger continually called plays for Darger to screen for Adams and for Adams to drive to the basket. If the Aggies' defense helped on Adams, he kicked the ball out to Darger on the perimeter.

"When we can get Joe open 3s, that's what we need to do," Adams said. "Against better teams, we can't shoot like we did tonight."

UNLV shot 21-for-57 (36.8 percent) from the field, making 10 of 24 shots inside the 3-point line.

"We'll look inside more and try to get some baskets inside," Darger said.

Kruger made one lineup change by inserting Willis at point guard for freshman Oscar Bellfield, who started the first three games.

Willis had eight points and four assists in 26 minutes. Bellfield had four points and three steals in 23 minutes.

The Rebels were outrebounded 41-37 by the Aggies, who were led by Ed Jones with 18 points and Thomas Coleman with 15. Jones did all of his scoring in the second half.

UNLV will play its first road game Monday night against Texas-El Paso.

Yes our inside game sucks, but its not like 20 minutes against either of these teams will fix that overnight. Its just going to take time - plain and simple. And in the end, one or more of our "Big Three" might not make it (nice auto industry analagy).

Of the three, Massamba IMO has the best chance to make a real impact.

This is where I'll agree with you guys: how much talent does it take to rebound? I would say that is a bigger measure of desire, and the bigs are lacking it.

What has Santee done? 6.3 POINTS A GAME. You have a shooting guard "Wink" the gets more rebounds than that guy a game. A small forward Darger who has more rebounds a game. We have Santee playing center with Hamga and Massamba hardly getting minutes.

Get Hamga in the 5 spot and live and die with it.

    Point guard: Bellfield
    Shooting guard: Adams
    Small forward: Mitchell
    Power forward: Rougeau
    Center: Hamga/Massamba

Give it another month or so and that's our best starting 5. I like that line-up.

Tom wrote on November 23, 2008 09:28 AM: The inside game for UNLV is horrible. They gave up so many easy putbacks to #23 last night it was a joke. They will never compete against the better teams with such a weak inside game. It was hard to watch last night. The real hero last night was Rutledge. He had some key steals during that run and played a good 5 minutes when the Rebels needed it. The team missed a lot of wide open looks too. Hate to be so negative, but last night was not a good one.

To much outside shooting gents. But, then again I'm a fan of smash mouth basketball and high % shots. I don't care if a team never shoots 3s.

Bloody some noses on the inside AND BANG THE BOARDS,WE HAVE THE HORSES TO DO IT.

Robb wrote on November 23, 2008 09:09 AM: I would rather be 2-2 and tested our bigs Hamga and Massamba. I feel giving them some valuable minutes against weaker teams is the most important thing right now.

We need to develop a inside game. We can't just rely on 3s. The last four games was the time to do this.

I love the Rebels and coach but I don't like the way we are playing right now.

I had a chance to see BYU play and right now they would kick the horse
$h%t out of us. As much as I hate them I'll call a spade a spade. It is what it is.

BUCK wrote on November 23, 2008 08:09 AM: sO, let me get this straight...we play a superb game against NAU, then another sloppy, questioning UNLV's credibility game last night. This team, still hasn't pleased me, or answer all my questions. The night they don't shoot so much from three, we blow out opponents...its common sense. But then, the night we shoot ridiculous three's we look absolutely awful. Like Robb said, I won't be surprised if they lose tomorrow. Thank god we have our first Road test coming up so we can really see what this team is about. These Rebs looked awesome in only one out of 4 games this season...maybe we need to start playing tougher opponents (cal/cincy) and road games (UTEP) This is a very big stretch for this team...I won't be surprised if we come out of this next week 5-2. No more expectations for this team until proven otherwise, a word they have lacked all season.....CONSISTENCY!

We have a guy who is 7 foot and a guy who is 6'10. Against, these soft teams we should be trying to develop a inside game. Out rebounded? I don't think so. That is total UNEXCEPTIBLE Hamga and Massamba need 20 min each. We need a inside game. Kruger,is relying to much on the outside shot.

Things are not right and it better start changing soon. Don't be surprised we lose to El Paso.
