  • Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Tom Williams has been hired at Yale, becoming the first black head football coach at the Ivy League school.

    A person familiar with the decision confirmed the choice Monday on the condition of anonymity, because a formal announcement had not been made. The school will have a news conference Wednesday.

    Also: North Carolina junior wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who set 14 school receiving records, said he plans to skip his final season and enter the NFL Draft.

    Southern Mississippi linebacker Gerald McRath, Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year, is declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft, the school said.

    BASEBALL

    Angels' Scioscia agrees to contract extension

    Manager Mike Scioscia and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed in principle on a multiyear contract extension.

    Scioscia's current deal runs through 2009, with a club option for 2010, for about $2 million per season. General manager Tony Reagins said Monday the extension "goes well beyond" 2010.

    The Angels are 803-655 in nine seasons under Scioscia, who turned 50 in November. They won the World Series in 2002 and have won four of the last five American League West titles.

    Also: Former All-Star pitcher Derrick Turnbow agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

    Royce Ring, who was with the Atlanta Braves last season, became the third left-hander in the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen, agreeing to a one-year contract.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    Las Vegan Gaughan lands Nationwide ride

    Brendan Gaughan will drive the No. 62 Chevrolet for Rusty Wallace Racing this year in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

    The Las Vegan drove for Circle Bar Racing in the 2008 NASCAR truck series last year and will compete full time in the Nationwide series this year. The Gaughan family's South Point hotel will be a primary sponsor on the car for several races.

    Gaughan was a teammate of Wallace with Penske Racing in the 2004 Sprint Cup series and now will be a teammate to Wallace's son, Steve.

    Also: Los Angeles Lakers forward Luke Walton will be sidelined at least two weeks by a foot injury.

    Phoenix Suns guard Jason Richardson is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol in an American Indian tribal community in metropolitan Phoenix in the early morning of Dec. 21.

    Former NBA player Antoine Walker was charged with suspicion of drunk driving in Miami Beach, Fla., early Monday, further hurting his chances of playing again this season.

    Oklahoma City rookie forward D.J. White had a second surgery to remove a benign growth from his jaw, and he is expected to miss at least the next 12 weeks.

    The Los Angeles Clippers acquired 7-foot-1-inch Cheikh Samb of Senegal from the Denver Nuggets for a conditional second-round draft pick.

    The Golden State Warriors waived rookie guard DeMarcus Nelson, who opened the year as the starting point guard.

    Pittsburgh (14-0) made it to the top of The Associated Press men's college basketball poll for the first time, receiving all but two first-place votes following a week in which season-long No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Connecticut lost.

    Canada won its fifth straight gold medal at the world junior hockey championships, beating Sweden 5-1 in the final in Ottawa.
