Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Tom Williams has been hired at Yale, becoming the first black head football coach at the Ivy League school.

A person familiar with the decision confirmed the choice Monday on the condition of anonymity, because a formal announcement had not been made. The school will have a news conference Wednesday.

Also: North Carolina junior wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, who set 14 school receiving records, said he plans to skip his final season and enter the NFL Draft.

Southern Mississippi linebacker Gerald McRath, Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Year, is declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft, the school said.

Angels' Scioscia agrees to contract extension

Manager Mike Scioscia and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed in principle on a multiyear contract extension.

Scioscia's current deal runs through 2009, with a club option for 2010, for about $2 million per season. General manager Tony Reagins said Monday the extension "goes well beyond" 2010.

The Angels are 803-655 in nine seasons under Scioscia, who turned 50 in November. They won the World Series in 2002 and have won four of the last five American League West titles.

Also: Former All-Star pitcher Derrick Turnbow agreed to a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

Royce Ring, who was with the Atlanta Braves last season, became the third left-hander in the St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen, agreeing to a one-year contract.

Las Vegan Gaughan lands Nationwide ride

Brendan Gaughan will drive the No. 62 Chevrolet for Rusty Wallace Racing this year in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

The Las Vegan drove for Circle Bar Racing in the 2008 NASCAR truck series last year and will compete full time in the Nationwide series this year. The Gaughan family's South Point hotel will be a primary sponsor on the car for several races.

Gaughan was a teammate of Wallace with Penske Racing in the 2004 Sprint Cup series and now will be a teammate to Wallace's son, Steve.
