ROADKILL AGAIN: Loss cuts Rebels' options

NCAA bid chances hurt by Cowboys

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- After absorbing all of Brandon Ewing's best shots, UNLV walked away with a black eye that might still be hurting in the middle of March.

The Rebels' chances of reaching the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection took a serious hit Wednesday night as Ewing threw an array of haymakers.

  • The senior guard made five 3-pointers and scored 29 points for Wyoming, which took a big early lead and held on for a 77-68 victory over UNLV before a crowd of 4,703 at the Arena-Auditorium.

"This team is tired of losing. We wanted to make a statement," said Ewing, who shot 8-for-16 from the field and 8-for-9 on free throws. "Big-time players step up in big-time games, and that's what I wanted to do."

It was a big-time disappointment for the Rebels, who appeared uninspired and turned in a poor offensive performance as they dropped to 19-7 overall and 7-5 in the Mountain West Conference. The latter includes a 2-4 road record.

UNLV's lethargic play puzzled coach Lon Kruger, who said, "It's hard to explain or understand, especially at this point in the season."

With four games left until they host the MWC tournament, the Rebels' options for reaching the NCAA Tournament are dwindling. They host Brigham Young on Saturday.

"We've been up and down all year. We've got to lay it out there every night to have a chance," Kruger said. "This was not the plan we had in mind."

UNLV senior Joe Darger said, "Every game is huge for us, so it's very frustrating. We didn't play well most of the night. Everybody is obviously upset over the loss."

Wyoming (15-10, 4-7) raced to a 14-point lead in the first half and rode that momentum the rest of the way, never trailing after halftime.

Tre'Von Willis and Wink Adams each scored 18 points to lead UNLV, which shot 35.5 percent. The Rebels hit only 5 of 26 3-pointers, with Darger going 1-for-8 (all of his shots were 3s) and Adams 1-for-5.

"We missed a lot of shots," said Adams, who went 6-for-16 overall. "We settled for a lot of 3s instead of getting to the basket."

A 3-pointer by Ewing gave Wyoming its largest lead, 55-38, with 11:11 remaining.

After a steal and dunk by Rene Rougeau, Willis hit a 3-pointer to pull UNLV within 58-55 with 4:36 to play. But Ewing made two free throws and Sean Ogirri hit a crucial 3 as the Cowboys stopped the Rebels' rally.

"We've got to find a way to play with some energy," said Rougeau, who scored 16 points before fouling out in the final minute. "It's frustrating to see everyone not into it."

Wyoming was the more aggressive and physical team, earning a 44-29 advantage in rebounds and limiting UNLV to four second-chance points.

Ewing made three 3-pointers in the first half, all during a 13-2 run that put the Cowboys on top 33-19. He entered the night needing eight points to reach 2,000 for his career, and had 16 by halftime to carry Wyoming to a 35-25 lead.

After his achievement was announced during a timeout, Ewing went to midcourt and danced as the crowd roared.

"Ewing made a lot of shots, and he had a lot of good looks in the first half," Kruger said. "We wanted to give him a lot more attention than we did."

The Rebels stumbled through a sloppy first half in which they shot 30 percent, missed all 12 3-point attempts and had seven turnovers.

Fan today and tomorrow wrote on February 20, 2009 01:04 PM: With the three point line moved back, we should have expected a poorer percentage of made 3 pointers this season. The problem is with the senior leadership on this team. Darger and Adams have made so many big 3 point shots in their career that they don't always look for the best shot, but for open 3 point shots. The offense also appears to be pretty vanilla and as soon as the 3 point shots stop falling they have nothing else. We should have been more dedicated this season to starting our offense by feeding the post, instead of continuing to always start with a high pick and roll.

Continued quality recruiting and a more balanced offense will help next year.

UNLV has an unfair advantage, you all should be happy. If the MTN. West tourney was played in Laramie every year I would be happy so stop the crying.......

johnny5 wrote on February 19, 2009 05:46 PM: Fire Kruger=Idiots you are an idiot. I dont care if UNLV fires him or he goes to Arizona just as long as here isnt here anymore. He sucks!!!! Period, end of discussion. He can't recruit. When is the last time we got a top 25 recruit????? Theus brought the No.3 recruit in the nation to New Mexico State of all places. Players want to play for Theus because he is an ex-NBA star and his type of uptempo play.

So Fire Kruger=Idiots, who is so good that we have coming in. Lopez, soft like the rest of our wus big men. Marshall, overrated and another guard. Hawkins, another guard who was barely recruited by anyone. Yea that is an awesome recruiting class. How many recruits do we have playing in the McDonalds All-America game? ZERO!!!! When Kruger lands a top 10 recruiting class then we can talk, until then you are a moron.

The Sweet 16 team played over their heads. Studs? What studs? If they are all such studs why didnt they all go to the NBA????

If Theus had this team this year, we would be a hell of a lot better than we are and we sure wouldnt lose to Wyoming, TCU, and Colorado State. Pathetic!!!!

And FYI buddy, I have said from day one that Kruger cannot coach and it couldnt be more obvious for anyone that has a brain watching the games. Kruger has no offense and as long as that is the case, UNLV will not win. None of our players can penetrate and get a bucket when we need it. None can take someone to the hole and dunk either.

Fire Kruger=Idiots wrote on February 19, 2009 05:29 PM: If you say this you are an IDIOT. Bring Theus in = Bigger Idiot! Theus was already getting in trouble with the NCAA for recruiting when he left New Mexico State. UNLV will NEVER fire Kruger so I guess we can just let all you tools come out after a loss and talk your nonsense.

    1. Cant recruit? You might want to see what we have coming in next year and if we land Rudd...... anyways dumb statement

    2. Cant coach? The sweet 16 team was full of studs? Last years team was so good. Theus dosent get those teams to where they went!

Lon is here to stay and UNLV will continue to play in the field of 65 as long as he is here!

johnny5 wrote on February 19, 2009 03:30 PM: It is great to see all you guys come around. I have been saying since day 1 that Kruger cannot coach. We havent ran a play since Spoonhour was here. Kruger just lets the guys play 1 on 1 street ball. Kruger is probably the worst motivator I have ever seen.

FIRE KRUGER!!!! HIRE THEUS!!! I Hope that Kruger goes to Arizona because he is a horrible coach. If we get Theus we will get much better recruits, play at a faster pace, full court press, trap, etc. Not only that, we will have an OFFENSE.

Those wins over Louisville and BYU mean absolutely NOTHING when we go to Colorado State and Wyoming and lose.

Kruger needs to bench Wink until he wakes up and realizes he is playing like a middle school kid. He cannot hit a free throw if his life depended on it. How are we so bad at free throws? NO ONE IS GUARDING THEM...another reason Kruger is a horrible coach, he cannot get his players focused.

For four years I have watched the same thing...one on one...im tired of it and we need a change. We have no big men coming in that are any good. Lopez is a toothpick and he will be about as good as the rest of the sorry big men we have.

KRUGER TO ARIZONA, THEUS TO UNLV!!!!!!!

Dear Lon, If that's the case and that's all you have to offer as an explantion then maybe it's time you consider stepping down. Your recruiting has actually gone backward rather than forward as evidenced by these current bigs. Cease from "holding up" the community any longer for the exorbitant amount of money that is your contract. You have not delivered to the level of expectations you were brought here to deliver. You're used to packing up and moving on so let's just call it a day and you can count this as just another one of your stops. Adios....

Alex wrote on February 19, 2009 02:57 PM: I love all the fair weather fans we have to stick with this team through good or bad. Lets get a strong crowd for BYU who will get their buts pounded where were all these fans the last 15 years when the teams stunk
