LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 4 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Connagher - Liked his last out maiden claiming win on the front end; could be lone speed if no others protest.
Oak Kye Why - Sure to be well overbet due to his fastest last out Beyer speed rating; outran his 11/1 debut odds.
Long Shot - Sammy's a Runnin'
Race 2 - 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $54,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
Raetodandty - Speedball will like the turf rail out 7 feet tonight; Joe Talamo plays catch me if you can.
Unionize - Good second in last in a quick turf sprint; will need some early pace to do his best work.
Long Shot - Dream Now
Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Sparrow - FTS from juvenile and sprint maven Wesley Ward; been working quick at Keeneland, expect big tote board action.
Missilette - Looks best among the ones with race experience; notice I'm leaning toward the FTS in the bottom-level affair.
Long Shot - Darling Disarray
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
Candy Coat - Was badly overmatched in last; his race two back, if repeated, is fast enough to defeat these.
One Vote - Was flattered when Changing won next out; looks cheap, but has plenty of back class to repeat today.
Long Shot - Taxi Fleet
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Absolutlypositivly - Matt Chew has an uncoupled entry, so caveat emptor; has been knocking on the door.
Cee's Pryme - FTS from Carla Gaines was made the morning-line favorite; fast works for one from a live baby barn.
Long Shot - Gobbler's Knob
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Justice Is Brief - Protected from being claimed on return; this is a great spot for A. C. Avila comebacker to win.
Caitie's Secret - MSW graduate facing winners for the first time; few handicappers realize it's the biggest class rise in racing.
Long Shot - Warren's Jitterbug
Race 7 - 1 1/2 miles, $125,000 Cougar II Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
Richard's Kid - Interesting that last year's top 2 finishers are returning; ran well off a 4-month hiatus in the Gold Cup.
Temple City - Has the gas to provide the target for this field; is bred by Dynaformer to run all day long.
Long Shot - Unusual Suspect
Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $21,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
No Stadium - Ran well off of a 3-month hiatus; was dropping from MSW to maiden claiming and was not embarrassed when third.
Royal Dream - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; his race two back must be repeated.
Long Shot - Body Builder
Best Bet - Justice Is Brief (race 6)
Del Mar Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$26.20; Long Shots, 7/2/$13.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 116/31/$218.00; Long Shots, 58/5/$56.20; Best Bets, 7/3/$17.60
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #8 Red River Aggie (5/1) in race 4 at Ellis Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Great Gracie Dane won at Saratoga paying $6.10 to win, $3.90 to place and $3.00 to show. Stats - 136/98/$748.40
