UNLV FOOTBALL: New AD working fast to hire coach

Livengood to interview Hauck, Franchione for job

UNLV's search for a new athletic director dragged out, but the man now running the department apparently is making sure the search for a new football coach is handled quickly.

One day after being hired as athletic director, Jim Livengood lined up interviews with Montana coach Bobby Hauck for Sunday and longtime head coach Dennis Franchione for Monday, sources said Friday on the condition of confidentiality.

One source close to the hiring process said those are the only two coaches who will interview for the position.

Livengood, Arizona's athletic director for 16 years before taking the UNLV job, did not comment on any specific candidates. He also said he didn't have a timeline.

"The most important thing is to get the right person in here," he said.

UNLV, which last had a winning season and bowl appearance in 2000, has been searching for the right coach. Mike Sanford was fired in November.

Hauck and Franchione certainly have had plenty of success.

Hauck is 80-17 at Montana with Friday's 23-21 loss to Villanova in the Football Championship Series national title game.

Franchione, who works for ESPN Radio, has a history of turning around programs, mostly notably New Mexico and Texas Christian.

A coaching hire is expected soon. Approval of the new coach's contract is on the agenda for the Board of Regents' special meeting Wednesday, though that item can be changed.

Livengood still has some unfinished business to wrap up in Arizona, but not until after this hire.

"I'm going to be here until we get this done," Livengood said. "I'm not going anywhere. We're working every hour."

Details of Livengood's contract were revealed. He received a three-year deal that began Thursday with a base salary of $295,000 per year. It is more than the $280,000 base he received as Arizona's athletic director and the $285,000 previous UNLV AD Mike Hamrick earned.

Livengood said he earned more than the base pay at Arizona, though he wouldn't go into specifics. He said the important issue was the length of his UNLV contract.

"If I do a good job ... I can see being here a long time," Livengood said. "My first 24 hours here, I've liked it a lot.

"It'll be exciting, I guarantee that. We've got to get the first part of the puzzle."

He's very personable and an excellent recruiter, but it is very clear that Bobby wants to move on to bigger pastures and now would be a good time. Two good reasons why UNLV should hire Bobby Hauck: his age, he's not at the end of his career, but rather right in the middle of it and he's a great recruiter. He would definitely bring the level of play up at UNVL.

One major fact that Montana has going for it, is that it will always be a draw for good players that can't make it in the bigger schools. So whoever coaches there is going to have success. A major factor that UNVL has going against it and will always be there is that there are too many distractions in Vegas. You'll never consistently be at the top, so Bobby would be a natural fit - close to the top, but not quite there.

Hire Bobby and you won’t be disappointed.

Trust me when I tell you that FRAN will take you to the PROMISED LAN(d).

The other cool thing about Dennis is that he will provide exclusive access to the program via newsletter to high dollar donors.

Trust me, Vegas, Fran is NOT a gamble. You will WIN, WIN, WIN.

I also would change my offense and defense to what I think works, old but it works... the wishbone, veer, i formation... I would get my team to strength training early... my defense would use traditional defenses which I think are solid against BYU, UTAH, Airforce... My defense would stop them.... and I would guarantee a winning season... I am that confident....

I never said he was an expert. You said he never recruits Vegas. You are incorrect as he has. I only pointed out that he has been here before and it didn't go well.

I also didn't say anything bad about any of those Vegas kids. They are all talented, but you are out of your mind if you think any coach at UNLV should get them all just because they are in the same town. We are not entitled to them. We need to prove to them that we deserve them. We have done nothing to do that yet. Trying to compare UNLV to USC or Utah is a little silly. They are top programs year in and year out. UNLV not so much.

You are also showing how little you know about kids in this town. Having coached here in the Valley (including some of those kids that you mentioned) I can tell you first hand that the last thing alot of these athletes want to do is stay in Vegas. If they have the chance to get out, many of them are going to take it. It's a hard reality of this place.

As for doing my homework... You certainly didnt teach me anything I didnt already know. All those you mention are quality players, but I was already aware of that. I commented on your erroneous statement about never recruiting NV. I would also say that him not recruiting here has a lot to do with the fact that outside of those few quality kids here every year, there aren't a ton of kids that are good enough to play at Montana or other D-1 programs. They either are not good enough or are non-qualifiers and not worth wasting the time on them.

Who ran over UNLV at Nevada - a Vegas kid. Who scored 3 Tds against Oregon and 2 at USC for Arizona - a Vegas kid. Who ran over UNLV for Utah - a Vegas kid. Idaho with 4 starters from their bowl team - all from Utah. Payne a bad WR for UNLV? He is a Vegas kid. Recruiting Vegas not important? They just keep on back to beat UNLV each year. Getting someone who understands that going after Gorman' s football team makes more sense than taking the 5 th rated So Cal player needs to be an important role of the next coach. USC and UTAH get it- of course they have more Vegas kids going to play for them next year.

Do your homework before popping off about the effort of recruiting 1 player by Montana out of Vegas.

That would be Dennis Franchione! If I recall Livengood was the last to be interviewed. Smatresk you are so predictable.

Hauck does recruit Vegas. He did it when he was at UCLA and even while he was at Montana. It's not his fault that Jeremy Pate from Silverado ended up being charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, robbery and burglary in Missoula and getting kicked off the team. With a past experience like that I wouldn't blame him for not recruiting Vegas more.

For someone with contacts he seems to be just gathering resumes for koloski. tubberville, koetter, fulmer can walk in a room and get attention. Missed on Turner Gill. Don't settle for 2 interviews, give us someone dynamic or can recruit Vegas - akey or golden of temple. if you can win at temple you can win anywhere. Koetter can tell kids about what it takes to get in the NFL. Tuberville and fulmer developed great players. Withe these coaches we know they have a chip on their shoulder and can get unlv on sports center. Not sure Hauck can get that done. Need to win recruits and fans back. Sark at Washington showed kids he could develop them into NFL players with his USC track record. He had a late start too. Get a bigger name Jim they are out there!
