No slowdown for Muhammad at close of glorious prep career

RENO -- Mere hours after playing in a Bishop Gorman High School jersey for the last time, Shabazz Muhammad is set to take a significant step on his path to college basketball.
The 6-foot-6-inch swingman said he will make his official recruiting visit to Kansas today to watch the fourth-ranked Jayhawks host No. 3 Missouri at 1 p.m.
"I'm just looking forward to touring the campus," Muhammad said. "It's a great situation there at Kansas, should be a great game against Missouri. I just want to go to the campus and have fun."
Muhammad, who Rivals.com ranks as the nation's No. 1 overall senior prospect, scored 30 of his 36 points in the first half Friday night to power Gorman to a 96-51 victory over Hug in the Class 4A state final at UNR's Lawlor Events Center.
Muhammad's father, Ron Holmes, said Muhammad would depart a flight from Reno at 6 a.m. today. Holmes also said Muhammad will visit Duke the weekend of March 3 to watch the Blue Devils host North Carolina.
Muhammad also is considering scholarship offers from UNLV, UCLA, Kentucky and Arizona, among others. He plans to announce his decision in April.
"I think we have to start really focusing on that decision now," Holmes said. "It's going to become very stressful for him and our family. But we're going to take the visits and see."
Muhammad is ready to focus on the recruiting process, but didn't want it to overshadow a memorable end to his prep career.
"Right now I'm going to celebrate with my team and have fun," he said.
Muhammad stayed after the game to pose for pictures with dozens of classmates and fans. He also signed autographs for children and stopped before exiting the tunnel to sign for several fans calling his name from the stands.
"It's emotional," Holmes said. "He's had a good career here, he's won three state championships, so I'm proud of him. Proud of the team."
Muhammad is scheduled to play in the McDonald's All-American Game in Chicago on March 28 and the Jordan Brand Classic in Charlotte, N.C., on April 14.
