Rebels fall to No. 14 in AP poll, No. 16 in ESPN/USA Today poll
Tools
UNLV's loss at Wyoming on Saturday cost the team three spots in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls released Monday, with the Rebels dropping to 14th in the media rankings and 16th in the coaches rankings.
The Rebels (21-4) suffered a 68-66 Mountain West Conference loss at Laramie after Anthony Marshall and Mike Moser missed potential tying shots in the final five seconds. UNLV beat Colorado State 82-63 at home Wednesday.
UNLV was passed in the national rankings by Mountain West rival San Diego State, which improved to 20-3 with conference victories over Boise State and Texas Christian. The Aztecs are No. 13 in the AP poll, No. 14 in the coaches poll.
The Rebels are off until Saturday, when they host San Diego State at 1 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The top five teams in both polls were the same this week: Kentucky (23-1), Syracuse (23-1), Ohio State (20-3), Missouri (21-2) and North Carolina (20-3).
■ WOMEN'S POLL -- Baylor again is a unanimous No. 1 choice in The Associated Press women's poll, and St. Bonaventure entered the rankings for the first time ever.
The Lady Bears received every first-place vote for the 10th straight week after routing Missouri and Kansas State last week. Baylor (24-0) then routed Oklahoma on Monday night, after the poll was relased.
Notre Dame, Connecticut, Stanford and Duke rounded out the top five.
St. Bonaventure came in at No. 25. The Bonnies are 22-2, with the only losses coming to No. 12 Delaware and Villanova.
■ COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON -- Cougars coach Bobby Cremins said he was physically exhausted and that his doctor told him if he didn't stepped away from the team, he could seriously damage his long-term health.
Cremins, 64, said he wanted to clear up any misconceptions about his health, visit with players and return the focus to basketball. Cremins took an indefinite leave of absence Jan. 27.
He said he felt uneasy for a month before visiting his doctor. The prognosis was that Cremins was worn out, and his doctor suggested he take a break.
■ ALABAMA -- Crimson Tide forward Tony Mitchell was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
Coach Anthony Grant said the suspension came about because of an accumulation of things. He didn't elaborate but said the decision was made after Saturday double-overtime win over Mississippi.
It was the first game this season that Mitchell didn't start. He scored 14 points in 31 minutes off the bench.
Mitchell is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.1 points and 7.0 rebounds.

You know the saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"? You know what else stayed in Vegas? Aztecfans moms virginity one drunken night in a smokey room at the Stratosphere. No wonder he hates Vegas so much! Sorry about that Nancy!
Whatever Hey. Just remember that at the end of the day you still have to live in that second rate minor league dump called Vegas. AZTECS have won 9 of 10 from the pebbles. SCOREBOARD!!! AZTECS ARE IN FIRST PLACE IN MTN WEST! Deal with it chump. SAN DIEGO IS FIRST CLASS!!! Vegas is a hot, dirty, dusty, crime ridden dump!!! AZTECS!!!!!
Chace Stanback disappears in road games and relies too much on 3s. games. Last year proved he has a sweet mid-range jumper. For the rest of this season's road games, Chace needs to make quick cuts towards the basket. If he keeps moving, gets the ball and hits a few mid-range jumpers, the other defenses will have to work more. Without this change, UNLV will lose at UNM and CSU and wind up in 3rd place. Chace can make the difference in our road games if he broadens his game and then road games won't be such a struggle for the team. Go, rebs!
Asstec.Fan: I don't think they are evenly matched. I think the Rebels will win by more than 2 at the buzzer this Saturday. I'm expecting no less than a 10 point win. Also, I have news for you, SDSU will lose to New Mexico when they play at Viejas soon.
If you can't beat Air Force and Wyoming, you have no place in the top 20.
Take it easy LeepinFrog. Its all in good fun. The teams are evenly matched and each team should win on its home floor.
Looking forward to a great game....no excuses.
As UNLV fans, we can only hope that the team improves the quality of play while away from the T and M. They look terrific at home but I cannot figure out why such a difference away from home. The SDSU game awaits us, lets get excited about it now!!!
Oh joy, a week of asstec.fan little Johnny Mack falling all over himself to tell us all how great his asstecs are...bring on the little troll :-) :-) :-)
They had a bad game. It happens.
