A loaded field of drivers, including six who have combined for 33 class victories in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, will compete when local desert racing returns Friday through Sunday.

Laughlin hosts the first two rounds of the five-race SCORE Desert Series. Four-time Laughlin winners Brian Collins and Tim Herbst, Las Vegans in the SCORE Trophy Truck, and San Diego's Kevin Carr in Class 5, headline the field.

This weekend's event includes 20 races in the Pro division and three in the Sportsman classes, attracting drivers from 15 states and five foreign countries.

One major change this year is Saturday and Sunday will be considered separate events in relation to championship points, money and trophies.

■ MIDNIGHT MADNESS -- The Las Vegas Motor Speedway's popular Midnight Mayhem legal street racing returns to The Strip at LVMS on Jan. 27.

The program, in its 11th year, is open to drivers with a valid license, proof of insurance, a street-legal car or motorcycle with current registration, and proof of ownership or written permission from the owner.

Minors must have a signed parental consent form, and all drivers must pass a safety inspection.

Gates open at 7 p.m., and the first qualifying run is 45 minutes later.

■ INSIDE LOOK -- Fans for the first time will be able to sit in on the drivers' meeting before the Kobalt Tools 400, the NASCAR Sprint Cup race March 11 at LVMS. The meeting will take place next to the main stage inside the Neon Garage.

■ DRAGS TESTING -- The Speedway's Strip will have testing from Feb. 3 to 5 for Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Mod, Alcohol Dragster, Alcohol Funny Car, Pro Stock Bike, Nostalgia Dragster and Nostalgia Funny Car.
