UNLV bats rip Utah for baseball win

The UNLV baseball team racked up 19 hits in a 9-2 win over Utah on Saturday at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Brandon Bayardi went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a walk and three runs scored, Trent Cook was 4-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored, and Scott Dysinger was 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.

Starter Zak Qualls allowed two runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings for UNLV (3-3), striking out seven and walking one.

■ UNLV TRACK AND FIELD -- At Albuquerque, N.M., the Rebels took fourth at the Mountain West Conference indoor championships, finishing with 88 points. Texas Christian won with 141.

UNLV got wins from Kelsey Williamson in the 800-meter run and the 4x400 relay team, among six top-three efforts for the Rebels on the meet's final day.

■ UNLV WOMEN'S SWIMMING -- At Oklahoma City, the Rebels finished third at the Mountain West championships with 551.5 points. Boise State edged San Diego State for the title, 747-742.

Jessica Heim won the 1,650-yard freestyle for UNLV, and Marley Prothero won the 200 breaststroke.

■ UNLV MEN'S GOLF -- At Palm Desert, Calif., the Rebels shot 9-under-par 279 in the first round to take a one-stroke lead over Auburn for first in the 24-team Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The second round, suspended because of darkness, will be completed this morning, immediately followed by the final round.

Kevin Penner led UNLV with a 5-under 67, one stroke behind leader Niclas Carlsson of Auburn.

■ UNLV WOMEN'S TENNIS -- The Rebels edged Long Beach State 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The 49ers swept the three doubles matches for the first point, but UNLV (6-3) rebounded to win four of six singles matches. Lucia Batta paced the Rebels with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Anais Dallara at No. 1.

■ UNLV SOFTBALL -- At Santa Barbara, Calif., the Rebels lost 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara and 11-7 to No. 23 Houson in the Gaucho Classic.

Paige Emerson and Stefany Valentino both went 3-for-6 on the day for UNLV (6-7), and Jaexie Balilea was 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

■ COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA SOFTBALL -- At Salt Lake City, the Coyotes (8-16, 3-9 Scenic West Athletic Conference) were swept by Salt Lake Community College, losing 11-3 and 13-6.
