APPETIZERS: Remodeled Gold Spike's goal is quality food at good value

When the new owners of the Gold Spike remodeled the casino's restaurant, they did more than just change the furniture.

They built a brand new restaurant, replaced the furniture, bought new equipment and created a new menu, says spokesman Michael Crandall. The Golden Grille opened recently offering a variety of casual American food in a modern, no-frills setting.

The goal, Crandall says, was "value, value, value. That's what we were going for. We want to be the best quality restaurant while offering value."

The dining room was expanded and now seats about 60. White tables and chairs, along with stone features and a tile floor, accent the bright room.

The menu is partly L.A. inspired, says Crandall, who did a lot of taste-testing and has a hot dog featuring his last name, Crandall's chili cheese dog ($3.99). The downtown dog, an all-beef frank wrapped with bacon ($3.99) is one of those hotdogs you see on menus in L.A. restaurants, he says. There's something for nearly every palate, including hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, breakfasts, hot entrees, salads and more.

The Golden Grille is open 24 hours daily. Reservations are not required. For more information, call 380-2807.

Specialties: 12-ounce prime rib with baked potato and vegetables, $4.99 (served 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily); Cuban sandwich, $6.49; downtown dog, $3.99

Appetizers: Chef's homemade meatballs and marinara, $4.99; fully loaded nachos, $5.99; shrimp cocktail, $4.99

Soups/salads: Soup of the day, $3.49; Cobb salad, $7.99; barbecue chicken salad, $6.99, tuna salad, $6.99

Entrees: New York sirloin, beer-battered shrimp, $7.77; Meatloaf with vegetables and mashed potatoes, $7.49; herbed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and vegetables, $8.99

Please research the menu and quality of food before writing an article. I am at the Gold Spike regularly and know many of the employees, and will not eat there because every casino on Fremont St. has better pricing and better food. This article sounds more like a paid advertisement from the casino than it does an actual unbiased article.

I have enver liked the Fremont Street Experience canopy and the nature of making a mall out of that end of Fremont Street.

I found it to be a clean hotel, cheap, with an ugly casino and dumpy coffee shop, but the price was right. The price looks like it's still right and I, for one, who has been there, can see they did a beautiful job remodeling the cafe.

I just have one question...why does a cuban sandwich cost more than prime rib and chicken cost more than a steak???? Didn't they get good deals on ham and pork and chicken too? At any rate, I would order a hot dog for lunch and the prime rib for dinner.....and spend a few pennies in the machines and actually have an enjoyable time since I wouldn't be loosing my @ss.

Downtown is a dump wrote on September 16, 2009 05:49 AM: Wow, the R.J. has sold out it's journalistic integrity to the Gold Spike. How many does this make for the Gold Spike now? 10? One more and O.G. will begin to worry that the concept of Downtown will soon be replaced with "the Remodeled Gold Spike." Did you know that city hall is near the "Remodeled Gold Spike?" And, "the Remodeled Gold Spike" redevelopment plan is joke. Both are still dumps!
